N63/tu V8 Oil Consumption Settlement

Has anyone here actually gone through the replacement process of their N63 or N63tu engine? I put off dealing with it last year because I was too busy with a new house but I now think my 550i is definitely going through more oil. I have a monthly reminder to check and refill as needed but was shocked to find it in the red for the first time (same timeframe, same rough mileage, same driving pattern).

I really [really] don't want to give this car up anytime soon, so if I can get a new engine with BMW covering 50%, I'll definitely take it.

Just looking for any tips or insights before starting the process with the dealership.

LONG POST
Have just had my 52000 mile 2013 M6 S63tuV8 replaced by BMW as it was using more oil than it should.

Started to use oil about 8 months ago, no smoke at first, went to dealership for oil comsumption test and decided that it needed new head covers, and others bits replaced under warranty. (I had taken BMW extended comp. warr. when I purchased the car from a non bmw dealership). Got car back after about 2 weeks it asked for 1 litre of oil again.

Contacted dealership and they said to top it up but keep an eye on it. It then started to have the dreaded puffs of blue smoke when sitting at lights.
Back to the dealership it went , did compression test and No.8 cylinder was low, bore scope found scoring on same. They went back and forth with technical as they didnt know why bore was scored, that was last October.
They eventually agreed to replace engine rather than rebuild on advice of BMW.

My car was covered by warranty upto the price I had paid per claim, which was just shy of £30,000.

However , as they had already paid out around £6000 for the replacement of head covers/bits before , they deemed that this was still the same claim and would only pay £23,000 toward the new engine which was coming in at £43,000 , leaving me to find £20,000 .

I obviously said I couldnt pay that, a bit of arguing and begging the dealer was able to get goodwill from bmw and they reduced their costs which ended up with me having to pay £9000.
I am willing to do this as, at the end of the day, I will have a car which I was keeping anyhow only now with a 0 mile engine, rest of car is immaculate.

Thank you for the input and sharing your experience. That's my worry - is that the cost of the new engine (even if I'm paying ~50%) will be as much as the car is worth (without all the mods/add-ons). Will, only one way to find out. Dropping her off tomorrow at the dealer to begin the process. I was planning on getting ~$2,500 worth of parts to address maintenance and other issues - guess I'll put that on hold for now.

Will the new engine be free of the defects(?) that caused the original issue?

I seriously doubt it. The N63TU was suppose to fix the N63 issues.

When I briefly considering a N63 M car, I happened to meet a fellow that had a N63/N63TU (I forget which one) M5. He told me that he carried a case of oil in the trunk.

The problem is the stupid "hot vee" design - they put the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks - which is already a hot area - and created hell under your hood, and all the ancillary problems that go with excessive heat. Horrendous design.

They seem to be halfway decent after 4 revisions. I still wouldn't want one longer than 5 years.

i was almost going to pull the trigger on a F90 and keep that for the next 25 years but then i thought of this and didn't.

sticking with the 550 (which i got for a song) and on a wing and a prayer every day

mind you, dealer found metal shavings in the diff of my 340 which had next to no miles, so these cars aren't exactly built to last 25 years but i these are the last pure ICE cars and i want them in my garage!

... to F90 or not to F90 ...

Well car is back from the dealership. They had to perform an oil change and started logging oil level. I have to go back after clocking 1k miles for them to check the level or sooner if the oil level gets too low.

I'll keep this thread updated as progress is made.

They are built to last if maintained. Here in Germany, most of the BMWs I see on the road are 15-20 years old. People here keep expensive items for a long time.

It is also cheaper to repair them here, ofc, so that helps.

That said, the N63 will never be a reliable engine, no matter how many folks want to claim it. The hot-v might be good for efficiency in various respects, but it certainly isn't good for daily-driver cars that need to start on a regular basis.
