Lightbulb Consumer Reports Says BMW Builds The Best Cars In The U.S.

Well, well, well. Who would have thought that the mighty German brand would eventually return to glory, producing the best vehicles. Some made right here in the U.S.

Bravo!!!

Yes, you read that right. According to Consumer Reports, BMW currently has the best lineup of any automaker that sells cars in the U.S. This was determined based on each individual model’s Overall Score, which combines how it performed in CR’s road test with its safety, reliability and owner satisfaction scores. So not only does an automaker have to build cars that are above average to stand out, but it has to do so consistently across every vehicle that it sells.
Jaguar and Land Rover, perhaps unsurprisingly, fared poorly here, losing out only to 34th place Jeep. Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz also did poorly, placing 28th and 29th respectively, while Cadillac, Genesis and Infiniti ended up clustered in about the middle at 14th, 15th and 16th place. It’s also worth pointing out that Genesis fell eight spots since last year’s brand rankings. Audi and Acura did better, coming in 11th and 12th but still couldn’t crack the top 10.

Paid advertisements.
You won't find good impartial information in any magazine these days.

CR (at least used to) not take advertisement money. They bought the products and tested then. I bought two TVs based on their recommendations and both failed much sooner than I expected. I dropped my subscription and view their reports with a grain of salt. I use forums such as this for my research, which is why I dropped the N63 (from the F10) from consideration and went with the I6; BMW's bread-&-butter.

Their auto reports are based on subscriber's experiences. I got a survey years ago when I was a subscriber. The questions weren't objective at all; they were very subjective.

Consumer Reports doesn't take paid advertisements. So the information is pretty impartial.

Objectively BMW is currently making the best cars it's ever made. That's unfortunately a controversial statement around here for some reason. Yes I understand they may not all be the prettiest. But in terms of performance, quality, luxury, reliability, they're at the top of their game. The results speak for themselves. This is the 2nd year in a row that they're at #1.

My 2014 535i has been in for one repair; the notorious valve cover gasket. I easily replaced the foam around the blower motor a few months ago. Other than that, it's just had fluid changes and tires. The rear brakes appear to be due now at just over 83K miles; the front seem to be fine. Been out of warranty for almost 4 years now.

Agree that BMW is near the top. #1 position should include BMW, Honda and Toyota. No rating agency is precise enough to designate only one carmaker as the best.

On the other hand, it is becoming more and more widely known, that MB is at the bottom of the heap. MB is really poor in almost every measure of quality, reliability and dealer experience.

Not really surprising if you think about it... the B48/B58 paired w Zf8 are incredibly stout drivetrains... Idrive has become one of the best infotainment systems around.... but man... Mercedes - talk about falling hard... wtf was running that company and thought that making 4 cylinder AMG cars, egg shaped EVs and massively unreliable cars w poor quality control would be a symbol of success...

That thing is sooooooo ugly I don't care if it was #1 and they were paying ME!

Can't say I have ever bought anything based on CR or really any kind of reliability ratings. Now certain brands have a reputation of being extra unreliable (MB, Fiat, Land Rover come to mind) and I might give second thought to buying a used one of those, but if I really wanted one I would probably still get a new one or a CPO or just lease it.

I feel like BMW is going through another Bangle Butt phase. Honestly some of them look ok... but some....

Now if BMW could just address their overstyling issues.

My 2016 M235 6MT with 80K miles and Stage 2 mods, which I ordered new, has been absolutely bulletproof for over 8 years of ownership. The ONLY repair I had to make was get a software reprogram back in April 2016 because the car didn't like the Midwest winter fuel. That's it.

I do all the maintenance on the car and inspect the engine bay once a month for leaks and such. The only thing showing some oil weepage is the valvetronic servomotor gasket which is a $10 part and a 2 minute repair. The car is still on the stock clutch too. Not a freaking rattle in the car. I love this car and motor so much that I plan to replace it with a used 2017-2018 M2 DCT. I would keep it if it were an automatic. My other car is a Cayman 6MT and I don't need two 6MTs.
