I wanted to get some input from the pros about a square setup on my car.

The Car: E90(2010) 335d on Koni Yellows and OEM Sport springs. Currently staggered with 225/40-18 up front and 255/35-18 in the rear

What I'm Wanting: A tire width no less than 245, and a wheel diameter no more than 18 inches(17 inches preferred if possible). I like a "meatier" look. 255 on an 8.5" wheel is okay. 245 on a 8" wheel looks really good to me. Aspect ratio can be adjusted to be close to the current overall diameter.

What I Don't Want: I don't want to do any crazy camber adjustments, and don't want to roll/pull fenders. I'd like to avoid having to use spacers if possible. I don't want the wheels to look sunken in. I'd rather they stick out a bit.

I've been looking at Apex Arc-8s heavily. 17x8.5 ET20 with 255 tires sounds nice, but I have no idea how that will fit on my car. 17x8.5 ET40 with a 10mm spacers and 255 tires is also an idea I had, but again, I'd like to avoid spacers. I test fit some 17x8.5 ET40 wheels with 245 tires and it looked okay, but I'd like that extra width on the tire is possible.

Pictures are appreciated. Wheel recommendations are great. Any ideas you may have, I'm all ears.

I just recently went from square Style 159 17x8 ET34 PSS 225/45R17 to square Avant Garde M310 18x9 ET38 up front and ET23 (with 15mm spacer) at rear with PS4S 245/40R18. They fit the front perfectly clearning my Bilstein B8 on Eibach Pro springs by 1-2mm. No rubbing. The rears fit perfectly with no rubbing. I think 20mm spacers at rear would've been perfect, but I wanted to play it conservatively. I tried running 5-7mm spacers up front, but they would rub when taking aggressive corners with dips.

I just did 18x8.5 beyern spartans with ET30 and 245/40/18 conti pure contacts no spacers. Front rubs slightly in reverse with wheel cranked over but not forward. I also have a 2010 335d.

This is rubbing on the inside I'm guessing? Can you send pictures of how your car looks?

Going wider in front without adding at least a little bit of camber is almost pointless from a performance perspective.

It should look "better" though. You'll also be able to rotate tires front to rear, so at least you'll have that going for you.

Definitely not doing it for performance. I'm doing it for that last reason you mentioned. Rotating tires. I drive 25k miles a year, so it'll be nice to get more life out of my tires. Staggered with 600 WTQ just roasts the rear tires. I'll have dedicated track wheels with track tires for those special occasions. Otherwise, I just want to cut costs on tires.

My stock wheels are in bad shape so anything is an improvement.

I appreciate you thinking of us. The following square fitments would meet your criteria. Note the 17x8.5" ET20 you mentioned is an E30 M3 application and not one we typically stock (low demand).

17"

Option 1
17x8.5" ET40 - 245/40-17

Option 2
17x9" ET30 - 245/40-17

18"

Option 1
18x8.5" ET35/38 - 245/40-18

Option 2
18x9" ET30 - 245/40-18

255's can be used, especially on the 17x9" and 18x9" square fitments where the wheel width warrants the wider tire, however that is getting close to requiring just a touch of negative camber to ensure you do not rub. Many enthusiasts do it without dialing in negative camber, however tire brand and ride height variables may allow one car to be rub-free, while another slightly scrubs. Even if you need a touch of negative camber with the 255's, it is really easy to pull the factory camber pins and align the car. Adjustable camber plates are not required.

I've got Apex EC-7 with 18x9 wrapped in 255/35/18 Michelin PSS. They look great and don't rub. I just ordered a new set of the same tires, but now I'm wondering if I should have gotten Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in 245/40/18.... they're supposed to be a bit quieter, more sticky in rain and allegedly more sticky at the limit.

Just don't know if I want to give up 1/2 in width as the current set-up looks cool...

Suspension mods?

If you're rolling around with stockish alignment settings, you wouldn't notice the difference in width either way.

That's kinda what i figured. My front camber was about -0.5 when aligned last summer. I don't remember what the rear was, but it was "in bmw spec". But for Bilsteins, my suspension is stock..

Thanks FC! But for Bilstens and Dinan rear mounts, my suspension is stock, running a little negative camber (alignment pins)..

Going with the 245/40/18 PS4S. Very interested to see how they compare to the PSS in my car..

I've got a 335i with the staggered 18's and am switching to a 17x9et30 with 245/40/17 square setup. Everything I've seen looks great and I'm looking forward to better ride quality and pothole resistance. I think e90 lci's still look ok with 17's!
