Wanting to take my 335i to the track
Hey everyone,
I have been wanting to take my 335i to a track day. I did go once but it was only one lap and the season was over. Now that spring is coming I want to go out and learn. Just wanting some pointers as to what is/recommended to upgrade for a track/street car? This is not my daily anymore but I will still occasionally take it on the street. Things that I have done to the car already are: - FMIC not the big one but the one sold by CTS Turbo I think it is 7" but not stepped, hoping that will be ok? - I have M3 arms front and rear. But still stock swaybars, trying to find e93 ones or Eibach but no luck lol - Duel BMS catch cans vac and boost car is FBO but I think putting it back to stock map would be better? - Tires are Michelin Super Sports 265/35/18 rear and front is Firestone firehawk indy 500 235/40/18. Should I change them to the same brand? Or would it be ok to go out like this? - Eibach lowering springs on stock B4 struts, will be getting coilovers soon. Just racking my brain on what brand lol. That is about it, I am on fully stock Zimmerman and Akebeno rotors and pads, with old fluid. Worth it to change to stainless steel lines, fluid flush, and a pad change?? If so what brands are good? There are so many options I do not know what to choose. Anything else that I should change? Or will I be ok as is to go out and do a HPDE? |

My e9x BMWs have Stoptech brake lines. I highly recommend them.

If you're overdue for a brake fluid flush, that's a must.
Otherwise, I wouldn't be worried about the other items on your list. If you're just trying to get out there on street tires, then street pads (in good condition) seem fine to me. I'd be more worried about cooling than the other things you listed, but maybe that's not a major issue until you start running faster (my 335i neighbor at my last track day hit limp mode). |

Never had problems and have used them for years. Yes, you notice an improvement over stock, especially if you are replacing older rubber lines. Firms up the pedal and improves modulation.

The N55 has oil starvation issues on track, especially when you have upgraded suspension and sticky tires. I've read that overfilling the oil by a small amount might help, but in the long run I would look at possible upgrades in that area (S55 oil sump? Not a cheap or easy solution I think)
If you are confident of your map, I wouldn't revert back to stock. But if you have any misfires, roughness etc, make sure to completely solve those issues 100% because things like that will only get worse on track and may cause big problems if left unnoticed. |

Yup, you'll be just fine for your first time. Flush your brakes well with a high temp fluid, make sure everything is in good shape, and send it. Overfilling a bit on oil and bringing an extra quart is not a bad idea. Bring a tire gauge too.
Have a blast! Track days are insanely fun and a lot more intimidating than you'd think. Even though these aren't really great track cars, they're capable of a lot more than you probably are as a driver. I don't mean that in a bad way, but rather you'd have to be pushing a lot harder than beginner level to worry about what which coilovers you have. Just go have fun and most importantly, be safe! |
