N52b25a Silver to black top

I have an N52B25A with a silver cover, and my engine is broken, so I'm looking for a new engine. However, I see that there are different types of engines for the N52B25A with both silver and black covers. What is the difference? Can you mount one with the black cover without modifications, or do you need to transfer things from the old one? My cylinder head is not usable, so if I need to transfer it, that's not possible. I found one online post with the same question, but it's not entirely clear. One person says it can be swapped directly, while another says you need to hack your ECU and reprogram it. Can anyone help?
