What is a good milage to expect my n52 2009 328xi to be solid?
Until what milege I can expect it to be a good daily? It has 190km now, got it at 185km. Oil change anf filter every 5-7km. And I don't mind investing in it time to time trying to keep it in good condition , what can I expect from it? 250km? 300km? 200km;(?

At this point these cars are so old and cheap, you might as well think of it as driving a $7000 BMW for a couple of years as opposed to dishing out $60k for a new one. Instead of "paying" depreciation over the years, you have straight up operating costs to keep it on the road.
I bought my E90 330xi 6 speed msport for 7k with a fat stack of receipts at 190k km. Mostly for fluids, suspension refresh, random electrical issues over the years. I've already put in $6k in parts/tires to get it where I want to be and not leave me stranded. Some of the costs were associated with oddball things like broken CV axle which was $500, a cracked magnesium valve cover ($450) due to corrosion, and I paid a mechanic to replace four broken off aluminum headbolts by the timing cover which most people do not do. Scan your car regularly to keep an eye on what's going on. |

n52 I would say around 300k km, assuming water pump and seal changed.
Then other stuff will start to fail : a/c compressor, power steering pump, crank shaft seals. Depends how far you want to go. I can imagine a N52 with 1M km if no winter and everything has been replaced many times. regular oil change. There's few topics here ''300k miles club'' and even one with 400k miles. A 'real' fully loaded E90 can compete with ease with most modern standard cars for a fraction of the price. |

Be proactive instead of reactive with your maintenance and she'll be good to you. I DD a 2011 328i xDrive with 352K KM

I've had my 330i RWD for 18 months now and I've spent $5345 CDN on maintenance and repairs so far. That includes 4 new struts with all mounting hardware and bump stops, new tires, multiple alignments, some rough idle related parts, new CCV system, oil changes and lots of other small things. I reckon that typically maintenance is front loaded when you buy a new to you used car as the previous owner will have neglected a number of things (even the best cars will have some things that the PO just couldn't be bothered to fix or didn't care about like you do). I'm in Vancouver so my car is in pretty awesome condition since we don't have much road salt here and the pot hole situation is pretty good. If your in any other part of the country you'll probably see a bit more degradation due to the harsher climate and road conditions. The X drive system will also add to maintenance costs as it makes access to things like the oil pan even more complicated than it is on the RWD car. My estimate is that I'll end up spending about $1500-1800/year on maintenance & repairs over 5 years. Keep in mind I do my own work on the car 90% of the time.
Besides the rough idle that I can't figure out this car has been dead reliable and offers the best overall driving experience of anything I've ever owned (I'm at 18 cars now- nothing too expensive on that list though). I'd say its worth putting the money into an E90. Sure, you could buy a brand new Mazda 3 or something and ownership costs would be pretty similar, but the drive of the E90 is just so good. |

Thanks for sharing your experience. I m from Quebec so my car isn't the best body condition. Just changed waterpump and thermostat, I saw a lot of rust underneath, so I consider selling because of this condition, but I even consider to buy the same one but in decent condition. Love it! Driving experience is the best for the price.

currently at 192k miles (308k km)
Got the car when I was 18 and throughout 5 years of university it always had some problem or maintenance that had to be addressed but it never left me stranded which is saying alot bc my commute was 1 hr both ways. I drove it practically every day no matter the weather. After graduating I took it to a shop to diagnose and fix a starting issue I lived with for years and since then (3 years) its been near perfect. Last 2 years it has been full bolt ons with a flame tune and I beat on it decently hard and its still going on the original motor and transmission. Alot of problems ie sensor replacements can easily be diy'ed and there a write up for just about any issue the car can have. Most important thing is to maintain it properly 5k mile oil changes, 40-60k transmission fluid, dif fluid etc. Biggest issue with these is that they tend to spring oil leaks and the waterpump. aside from that it should be solid for a long time. |
