Sundays traffic jams for shopping

On a rare free Sunday, I went at 11am to buy some food at a big grocery supermarket situated in a retail park with some typical UK stores. Unfortunately, there was about a 30-minute wait just to get into the retail park, and there was no easy way to turn away and leave the queue. I still had to queue for about 15 minutes to leave it. Ended up going to a local grocery shop, and it will now be my choice unless I pass by and see no queue prior to entering. Also I have never been into ordering fresh food online, but really considering switching to this now.

We have a Tesco near us in a retail park and I’d not even consider going to it on a Sunday…the queue and the layout mean that it would be easier to park 10 minutes away and walk - not ideal for a weekly shop, but it can take 20 minutes to get into the car park from the main road - about 500 yards.

Monday morning…no queue.

I did Saturday 2-4AM, no shoppers only staff stacking shelves with a fresh food.

I tend to go after 8pm or around 7am, no queuing issues ever. The only problem is there's no fresh bread in the bakery. That said, if I go early then Lidl is just opening when I'm leaving Asda so I can go to the fresh bakery there and it's quite a bit cheaper as a bonus 😁

Yes. Seems to be getting worse. I suspect it's the same across the country.

What gets my goat, in these new shopping centres, the main road to the car park passes between the shops and the car park.
So all the foot traffic has to cross the vehicle traffic entering and exiting their car park.
WTF is that all about?

A lot of Tescos are arranged like that and the new 'Designer Outlets' centre in Cannock is the same.
FFS why?

Sadly roads on a Sunday now seem just as busy if not more than week days sometimes.

Sometime before I left the UK in '97, two things changed in my driving habits:

1) I switched to automatics because of the traffic levels in daylight;

2) I started doing all my long trips at night or carefully planning to be traveling "against the traffic" if forced to move in daylight.

My last two visits to the UK show that traffic density is even worse, except in one notable respect. I noticed that rolling around a built up area after 10 PM it was deader than I recall. I can only put that down to the reduction in the number of pubs and maybe a shrinking of the "pub culture" of days past.

With Crabb, subscribe to ocado smart pass and it auto books our Saturday 0830 delivery and puts our regular food in the basket. You can also set bi weekly and monthly stuff too. Been doing this for 7 or 8 years.

I do not understand why anyone would want to waste time food shopping, I absolutely DETEST it.

Everything is delivered now, I hate people and I hate shops with the exception of restaurants, which for some reason doesn't work getting it delivered!
