Retrofit Heated Steering Wheel, now have DSC codes
Hello all,
Today I retrofited a heated steering wheel to my car. I got the parts from the junkyard, from an E90 with a blown airbag. The install went without any hiccups and the heated steering wheel works just fine. However, when I start the car I now get two DSC codes, 5E3F and 5E50. I first attempted to clear them, but they came right back, almost as if they are permanent codes, except they are not, atleast not according to my BlueDriver scanner. The codes are related to the steering angle sensor so I attempted to recalibrate the steering angle sensor with INPA and just got a message "Calibration Steering Angle only with Steering Wheel Balancer". I researched and apparently many other people get this message when attempting to calibrate the steering angle sensor and they recommended to use Tool32 to calibrate it. So I did that and when I double clicked on "lenkwinkel dsc abgleichen" I get a classic BMW DING from the dash however the codes and cluster lights remain. Also apparently the process of calibration in Tool32 is supposed to take around 10 seconds however I get the results immediately. To me it seems like I got a bad clock spring. Is it possible the blown air bag damaged the clock spring even though the steering controls, horn and heated function all work? I also used both the steering switch cluster (what the wiper and turn signal stalk attach to) and the clock spring from the donor car. Is their a module in that steering switch component that has a different VIN that would trigger the DSC error? Should I have transferred the heated clock spring to my old steering switch cluster? I have screenshots showing DSC values in INPA and my results from my calibration attempt in Tool32. I also included a photo of my fuse box. Any help or input is appreciated |

Lol I'm an idiot, I put the switch cluster original to my car on the heated steering clock spring and the errors went away. My research indicates that the SZL module is part of that switch cluster and thus has a specific VIN coded to it, as with any other module.
Idk if this will help anybody else, but if you are doing a heated steering wheel retrofit, use the switch cluster that came with your car, or if you want to use the one from the donor car, you must have a computer software capable of changing the VIN on the SZL module to match the VIN of your own car. |
