My 2000 Z3 is the best, then the E90. I don't think the Z3 even handles quite as well with it's ancient E30 rear end but there is nothing that quite lives up to it including the E90. Now in the middle of winter on an Icey road well the poor E90 has to deal with that.

Bought the car brand new in 2007 and still loving it today. Nice to know it's probably the last natural aspirated inline 6 with without electric steering that drives and handles amazing.

Still puts s smile on my face every time I drive it

Cadillac famously said on the record that they only needed to sell a couple dozen CTS-V wagons to make that program break even. If they can offer stupid coupe-SUVs at a premium, they could just as easily offer wagons at a premium too - it's all the same platforms and mechanicals.
I still wonder how much of BMWs decision to not bring the G21 to the US was driven by either financial and/or a combination of regulations we may not be privy to. They stop the European delivery program, the SUVs are manufactured in the US and the G20 in Mexico for US orders so closer delivery points. The model line has also been expanded into "something for everyone". When I was in Germany I heard combustion engine manufacturing was moved to Austria due to regulations. If the M5 wagon graces our presence as expected, I guess the margins or exclusivity made it worthwhile for them to bring it here.

FWIW drove the G21 on the Autobahn, it's a great car and I would totally order one if it was available here (Wayyy better than the Volvo V60). But, the entire time I wished I had been able to source a E91 for the drive.

I love the E90! Peak BMW. Better than the E46 that it replaced. Hell I had my car shipped from California since I couldn’t bring myself to buy an F30. Classic lines, phenomenal road feel and nice ride quality. What more could one ask for?

Dreading the day I might say goodbye to it. But if med school ends up being up North, well…

Unless the E90 (RWD) with snow tires would be fine?

I'd even consider a wagon on stilts like a Crossroad/Allroad type set up if that's what it took to get a wagon here. You can quickly and easily slap some lowering suspension on it and get it to a proper height.

Just not a CUV or one of those X4 abominations.

I have a winter set I swap onto my RWD, I was surprised at how well it does in the snow. Not so much when the all-seasons are on though.

You'll probably be fine with dedicated winter tires. I have Xdrive and run all weather tires.

The only issue might be the low ground clearance of the car so you may get stuck if the snow hasn't been plowed often.

Previous to my E90, I drove only Jeep 4x4s in the New England winters. I'd prefer my RWD E90 with dedicated snow tires to the Jeeps in the snow now. I drove mine in a blizzard in the mountains of Upstate NY, and it worked quite well. Obviously off-road or in really deep snow the 4x4 would be better, but the E90 handled extremely predictably in the snow. Dedicated snow tires are key though, my car would probably not even drive up a hill in the snow with summer tires or all-seasons.

I really like the E9X chassis and I want to keep mine forever. The most notable flaw to me are the cheap plastics, I had the valve cover off to install MILVs this weekend and the plastic carrier that holds the wiring for the ignition coils wouldn't clip back on the valve cover all the way and the plastic insulation for the VANOS solenoid wire crumbled as I got the injector harness out of the way, in hindsight I should've unplugged it but oh well.

My only real concern is that parts will start becoming NLA, which will make maintaining a well kept E9x a real challenge. When the plastic parts become this brittle buying new ones is the only solution unfortunately.

The plastics are the only real flaw to me because the car feels well built in every other respect.

Yeah the problem with plastic parts in general is they get brittle with heat cycles. As annoyed as I get with plastic parts on old BMWs, I see it more and more with cars that are almost brand new from all the brands, I'd hate to see what those cars are like to repair down the road when they are the same age as my BMW.
