I'm assuming it's a leak but is this normal? It's not horribly bad you can see some greasy stuff on and around the cap. Do I need to replace like a o ring or something?

I think it's normal. There's a vent hole near the top of the cap that can seep some fluid. My 328i and my wife's X3 both had some gunk around the cap. I just wipe it down occasionally. It's never enough to drip.

I bought the whole cap, which I believe came with the O-Ring. https://www.ecstuning.com/ES2503542/

Yup. I've seen a system explode on a track car when the vent got plugged. Totally normal, and necessary. Just wipe it down occasionally.

Mine is also starting to do this too. Did replacing the cap solve the issue you were having?

Called The bmw dealership today and asked how much the rubber O-ring is...
Magic number is $18 for a goddamn piece of rubber that costs less than a dollar to make. I don't know how these guys sleep at night knowing they are robbing people with 1800% markup |

The TradeMotion parts dealership I use has P/N 32411128333 for $4.50. That said, I'd just take the O-ring up to a auto parts store and match it up. 'Taint no magic to it.

Easiest thing is to take in the cap itself, you may not find a perfect match for gland thickness and diameter, but you can find one that fits the cap. I would not say that OEM sizing is particularly critical in this application. Based on my experience with this and a separate water coolant fitting, BMWs O-ring groove designs aren't amazing. I think that I used the size 129 from the AS568 standard selection. |

What happens if you put in a new o-ring and you still get a leak?
What else could it be at this point? A few local shops have suggested it may be the crush washers need to be replaced on the lines?

New o ring does not prevent the gunk from forming. The cap is designed to vent. There is a hole on it.

Just wanted to chime in as I found this thread from searching as I also noticed I had leaking and gunk issue even though I replaced the reservoir with cap 25 000KM ago. Guess it's normal.
