I was surprised to read it was more then 1ltr but when I rung up BMW they said it was only more then 1ltr when dry and drained fully. With the squeezy sucky tube you'll be lucky to get everything out. Plug replacement was probably a recommendation from BMW and the garage followed it, no need to do it if it's fine though |

e91 Wagon Rear Differential fluid - Cross-Member
On the e91 wagons there is a cross-member covering access to the fill plug. It can easily be removed with 5 easy to access bolts. The 3 located at the rear (1) and by the jack points (2) are 18mm sockets and the two located in the middle of the cross-member are 16mm sockets. Luckily I was doing this (and changing my shocks) with the assistance of my friend's impact gun which made this an EASY step. Wouldn't be too difficult with hand tools as long at you have a good breaker bar. Once the cross-member is removed the job is the same as in the video.
