The idea of auto to manual swap in my E91 x-drive is an idea that is starting to really take root.
I am looking for advice on sourcing a used trans. I see them on eBay for less than $1000, $500 is typical. The mileage is typically well north of 100k if it is even listed.
How likely am I to get a good one? Do these wear like older E28 era transmissions with noisy bearings and balky 2nd gear synchros?

Used is a crap shoot of course, but it is a pretty robust transmission. A newer/low-mileage one would probably be better, but I'd rather source an "adult owned" one from a higher mileage commuter car over a low mileage car some jabroni did burn outs and drifted with.

Perhaps this is where seeing the donor vehicle would help…
