Exclamation 328i going into limp mode and turning off when hitting brakes

2007 automatic 328i

let me start off with saying i don’t know much about cars, let alone bmw’s, so please try to explain things as if you’re talking to a kid LOL…

i was out driving somewhere that’s about 40-50 minutes away. it was hot out so i had my ac on, not on full blast or anything though. i just got this car so i haven’t really had the chance to take it anywhere other than to work which is about a 15 minute drive, which has given me no issues.

so about half way through my 50 minute drive the car randomly shut off while i was stopped at a light. i thought it might’ve been a one-off thing so i just kept going, especially since this happened before and nothing else happened. but as i kept going, i noticed the car went into limp mode. everything slowly started going down hill from there. everytime i hit a light it’d shut off. when i was finally close to my destination, at that point it basically kept shutting off if i even touched the brakes. whenever i would turn the car back on it felt like the engine was kicking/stuttering back on.

extra info:
- i never went faster than 60mph max
- before everything started happening, the engine randomly revved and sped up while using cruise control

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Do you hear a whistling or high pitch noise coming from your engine bay?

Welcome!

First step will be to scan for codes. Tons of info on here and on Google about how to do that. If you’re looking for the quickest, simplest way to scan your car, the Foxwell NT510 (or similar BMW-specific scanner) will do the trick.

I’d avoid driving your car until you get this sorted.

my dad is a big bmw guy so he has a diagnostic scanner, but the last time he scanned (about a week ago now) he found nothing. unfortunately i have to drive it back home today but he’ll be able to scan for anything once i get there (hopefully i get there)
