Hi all, the AWD system on my 2008 bmw 328xi is not working and I’m having some trouble figuring out why.

I used to have ABS, Brake, and traction control lights on, along with a 4x4 error that would pop up. The car drove fine, but didn’t have ABS, cruise control, AWD, or traction control.

I took it to autozone, and got fault codes for all 4 wheel speed sensors along with “Clutch Gearbox ECU: VG malfunction - clutch is open - Rear Wheel Drive!”

I replaced a warped abs ring, now I have abs TC and CC back.

Brake and ABS lights went away, so I’m assuming all the wheel speed sensors are good? I still have a 4x4 error and traction control light, and for some reason the button to turn TC off isn’t turning it off (I tested TC on a gravel road, and it does cut power when rear wheels are slipping.)

I’m 90% sure the transfer case motor is ok, I tested it outside of the transfer box, and it went through the startup calibration when I started the car. Does anyone have any input on to what would cause the AWD to not work? Could it still be wheel speed sensors even though everything else works now?

There are many things that can go wrong inside the VTG box. Usually it's bearings. Have you ever replaced oil in the box? Are there metal flakes noticable in the oil?

You can try moving the bar inside the box that is moved by the motor. If it moves easily and doesn't spring back, the box is cooked.

I actually just replaced the gearbox itself, I guess I forgot to mention that. It was shredded on the inside, so I replaced it with a used unit and replaced the lubricant as well.
