Oil Overfilled...
Hey everyone, I've got a 2010 320i N46. The oil capacity for this engine is 4.25L - 4.5L I did a full oil change today I have had to do oil top ups due to oil consumption problems. Only when the level says add 1L I think I've done it maybe 6-7 times in 15000km I know I dragged the change out a bit longer than I normally would I've just be super busy... but when I went to empty oil I had a 6L pan thinking it wouldn't even get near the top I had to get another 2L container which got filled to the top also so a total of 8L - roughly 4L overfilled!!!! I was shocked myself, the vehicle had no problems running at all, I've used 2L in the last 4000km but haven't put any in for a while, so just wondering why the sensor didn't say it was overfull? I check it normally every morning before leaving because it automatically pops up on start up... but never read overfull, would this of caused any significant damage? No smoke after oil change? Or any noticeable engine differences? Or external leaks?

If you aren't having any issues I would say don't worry about it. There was an interesting youtube video i watched the other day where they basically somewhat proved that overfilling the oil wasn't as bad as everyone says it is.
Given that's not a super advanced engine taking, with longterm durability or anything... but still a bit eye opening in my opinion. My question though is... was your car telling you that your engine oil level was low or why did you keep adding so many quarts of oil? |

Would suggest scanning for codes just to see if anything comes up.
There are some good threads on here from people who’ve had issues with the OZS. I can’t recall if sensor replacement was the standard fix, but I’m not sure what else it might be (other than wiring, maybe…).
