Cigarette lighter wiring
Hi,
I got car without cigarette socket, because previous owner didn't buy "Smoker package"...I'm also not a smoker but I need 12V socket for various of devices. So, I've decided to retrofit the ashtray with 12V cigarette socket. http://c1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com/421342_x600.jpg I bought an used ashtray an found in WDS how to wire, but there is a third wire for lights inside the ashtray which is not shown in WDS. Actually, it's a some kind of circuit braked, I think, but I don't know where to connect it ![]() So, I need help here ![]() |

That's right. I can see LED inside the ashtray for the ring and for the illumination of the ashtray itself.
One wire from the LED is connected to ground, but the other is connected to third pin of the connector and I don't know where it's leads... ?! No info in the WDS: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jee22oev43..._cigarette.jpg |

I've found some info on some other forum:
"Brown is ground, gray/red is dimmable illumination, and the other is switched power" Dimmable illumination...but where it leads...!? ![]() mIRO |

Here are some photos I took when I added an additional power outlet under the passenger's dash panel; I disassembled the console to determine which wires to tap back near the footwell (brown = ground, green/yellow = power).
Since I didn't need a lighted power socket, I only needed those two wires, but there appears to be a third wire (white/red) in the ashtray harness that serves to power the light. BTW, the green/yellow wire changes over to red/black at the connector. But otherwise, it's a bit of work to disassemble the console for someone just doing it to help you out, so you have to luck out with someone happening to be doing some work in there. ![]() Just like my request for photos of the rear seat belt tensioner connectors; no one had responded, but I eventually figured it out (through a video I found on YouTube), as will you.

Hello, I got a car with a cigarette socket in the front. However I found that it was not hooked up. I looked around and could NOT find the harness to plug it in. My question is if you didn't buy the cigarette package then you don't get the wiring either right?
So NOT ALL e92 com pre-wired with front cig lighter wiring correct? I have to make my own. |

Bump: I can't figure out when the ashtray lights should be powered. When I had my ashtray it just seemed to be on. Now that I've switched the harness from the ashtray to my sunglasses tray, it isn't even powered at all I don't think. Help!

Trying to do this on my e91 also as it didn't come with the smoker package. Being a newbie at this wiring stuff, would you be able to share the type of tools and parts needed to do this retrofit? Perhaps an overview of the wiring connection diagram for dummies? ![]() |

Finally got it done.
Thanks OP and Augster for the instructions and photos. I also followed this useful tip in the rx8club to tap into the wires in car; https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...utting-228546/ |

FYI, in case anyone doesn't know this, even without the smoker's package, at least LCI cars do have two 12V outlets already (no idea about the older cars). One in the center console, and one above the passenger's left foot, going vertically up into the dash just behind the glovebox door. Super annoying location, but it's there. Why Ze Germans couldn't have just left it in the same location on non-smoker package cars but delete the ashtray is baffling.
![]() I did the "happy robot" rear center console cover, so my car has four. Can't say I have ever used those additional two a single time though! ![]()
