2006 330xi Sound system questions.
Hello all, new here. Have been trolling the encyclopedic posts for the stereo system in this car. I have read maybe 1% of the posts here looking for answers, and have found a lot!
Bought this for our daughter as her first car from our mechanic. Runs great, looks great, price was great, and the interior even smells great. But the LCD readout on the Professional HU was dead, so I thought how hard can it be? Also wanted to get a backup camera for her. I think I have the Top Hifi / Logic 7 option 677. Here are my clues: No Nav or iDrive, speakers in all 4 doors. Speakers on the rear deck, and subs under each front seat. Some posts here indicate a center speaker in the dash but I do not see one, maybe it's hidden? There are fiber connections on the HU harness, as well as speaker wire connections. There is an amp in the trunk just in front of the tail light. So do I have the Logic 7? Follow up question, if there is an optical amp, why do I also have speaker wires? Is the amp only for the subs, rear deck, and dash speaker? If I do have the Logic 7 is there a magic black box to keep the optical amp? I believe the amp is working, I have light in the fiber connection. Here is the list of components I have so far: Kenwood DMX4707S PAC RP4.2-BM21 Wiring Interface Connects2 CT51-BM07 Amplifier interface American International Dash Kits Boyo VTL17ir Backup cam We had everything wired up with the Kenwood attached to the PAC and Connects2 but didn't have sound. Called Crutchfield and did some testing. He called PAC tech support and they said the Connects Amp interface would not work with our car and this equipment so they sent me a refund. During testing I plugged the RCA connections from the PAC into the Kenwood and got audio on the front speakers! I think I can get all 4 door speakers working with my current equipment, as well as the backup cam. My current plan is to use the Kenwood and PAC to get sound through the doors and get everything mounted up so she can drive the car again. TLDR: Will I cause any problems or hurt anything by not having the optical amp connected? Is there an adapter for the Optical Amp? Thanks so much! PS: I miss the days of installing a Pioneer tape deck and connecting it to some 6x9's! |

Thanks for the reply, I've seen some of your posts like this and have read those links. Some of them are no longer working. Some go to missing download files.
I'm not trying to be a jerk but I did read all of them and still had questions so I thought I'd ask. We don't need a top of the line really expensive install. Just a Dad trying to do something nice for his daughter. |

northamericanmotoring.com had a vin decoder that worked. While it didn't give me the number of the option, it did list this:
Logic 7 AM/FM stereo w/CD player-inc: (13) speakers, radio data system (RDS), Auto-Store, MP3 capability, 3-channel FM diversity antenna system, digital sound processing, surround sound simulation So Logic 7 it is. |

Its easy enough to identify the amplifier and if you bothered to read the first 4 links or any of the Logic 7 links it would be obvious by just looking at the amplifier and which is about 4 times bigger than the Hi Fi one and has and optic input .
It's a big silver brick and the hi fi amp is black annodized metal and has only one connector up till 2009. |

Thanks for all the info, once again. I looked on avinusa.com to find a box to connect the optics. In their Q/A there is a picture of the dash showing the speaker location. I do not have that dash speaker, so I must have a 676.
The first video you posted was very helpful. I've seen that guy's videos before and he does a great job. It explained a lot about the system in under 2 minutes. Also, need to eat some crow, I made a mistake and do not have speaker grills in the rear doors. Sorry! |

In none of the posts about "what system do I have" did read anything like : silver amp = L7 black amp = hifi I apologize for offending you with my first reply. I'm frustrated with this project, not with your help. |

IN the Most Bus system that BMW setup this is and optical Bus Ring in which add on modules are connected to add functions like Sat Radio or Bluetooth phone Sos in the Logic 7 system the amp is also part of this optical bus ring.
The Head Unit can be considered the Server or controller for the Most Bus. All the Inputs and control for the Amp and these other modules are dependent on every module in the Ring working. So the amp gets control signals and the audio input from the head unit via the Most Bus. The code BMW proprietary as far as I know but some of the other German Car makers used this system . Some of the problems are if one module in the system fails all the others stop working . Read the Links on Logic 7. Hi Fi amps made after 2011 are Silver . and half the size of the Logic 7 amp. This stuff is covered in the links if you read them . Looks like mdecoder.com doesn't work anymore. Last edited by ctuna; 07-30-2024 at 12:26 AM.. |
