Oil Filter / Oil Change

For those of you who have changed your own oil I have a question....
Whats involved in changing the oil filter. Do you just twist off the black plastic cover, pull out the old filter, plop in the new filter, and twist the cap back on? What happens when you do twist off the filter cap? Does oil leak all over the place?

You probably won't get an answer on this for a while because we all got free oil changes. Unless people want to change their own oil more than what BMW recommends it to be.

I hear ya. I was gonna do an initial oil change around 5000 miles just for peace of mind and to also get any metal particles which may have come from the engine breaking in....

Guys,

Changing oil on BMW's is really easy because the filter is on top. I used to change the oil on my E46 330Ci every 5000. The process is as follows:

* drive the car onto the ramps
* place the oil pan under the drain plug
* open the drain plug and let the oil drain
* While it's draining, or after, open the oil filter slowly
* oil will not leak out because the pressure is down and you're draining it anyway. Even if you're not draining it, if the engine is off, and there is no pressure, you can open the oil filter and replace it anytime.
* once the oil finished draining, take the extra anal step of pouring in half a quart to "wash" out everything. This step is not necessary. Just anal. So just do it :-)
* once the oil is drained, reinsert the drain plug with the new ring that you got with your oil filter kit
* make sure you don't over-torque the drain plug. Just hand torque it... If there is a plastic cover that protects that area (E46 had it), put it back
* place the new O ring (that came with the filter kit) in place of the old O ring, which is around the oil filter cap, which you just took off. after you've placed the new O ring on the threaded filter cap, lube it with your finger with new oil. OR, lube it before, and then place it on the filter cap.
* place the new filter onto the pole which is part of the filter cap
* close the filter cap, and torque to 25.5 Nm
* Add oil
* close the oil cap, and turn the car on. Build pressure, and when you hear the engine sounding normal again, after about 1-2 seconds, let it run for another 20 seconds or so, you'll see the oil light go off after a few seconds, and then turn the engine off.
* take the car off the ramps
* check the oil level again
* drive around normally, and during the next day or two, recheck. Add if necessary (another anal step)

I plan on changing my oil either this weekend or next. I have 1400 miles, and I want to get all the break-in crap out of the engine. I just don't know if my old E46 oil filters are identical to the one on the E90. I hope so :-) If not, does anyone want E46 filters? :-)

Does anybody have the part # for the E90 330i oil filter? Is it the same part # for the E46 oil filter kit, or is it different?

Also, what viscosity does BMW recommend? 5W-30, like the E46?

Sorry for the delay

part guys here say part number for USA and Euro330i/325i oil filter kit is 11 42 7 541 827

its different from the E46 and inludes a new O ring seal

BMW reccomends 5W-30 full synthetic

Great, thanks a lot. One more queststion -- how many quarts do I add? On my E46 330Ci it was 6.9, I always added 7, and there was still room for a bit more :-)

Any ideas?

Looks like the oil capacity is the same ( 6.5Liters, sorry dont know quarts )

That doesn't seem THAT difficult, so why did the salesman try to tell me it cost upwards of $800 to change the oil on this new beast? Yes, 7 quarts of synthetic is going to run a bit more than 4-5, but not $700 more.

Finally the answer I've been waiting for. Been wondering for a long time as to whether BMW put in special break in oil from the factory. Now that I know they don't, I will definetely be changing my oil after 5000 miles....

Yup, sometimes people make the wrong claims and they speak with a lot of authority. I've done that too when I claimed that BMW doesn't drill holes into the front bumper... We just have to ATTEMPT to be correct, and do our best to double check our facts.

REMEMBER THERE IS NO DIP STICK TO GUAGE THE AMOUNT OF OIL IN THE MOTOR. How do we know How much to put into it? How do we reset the computer when it says "service Required" I can't stare a a damn light after i have changed the oil/filter.

Very good question, Blue330i2006! I am even having second thought about buying a E90 because it has no dipstick! I have been a BMW loyalist for more than 30 years and for the first time am seriously considering the dark side to replace my E39! i-Drive 'drove' me away from the new 5 Series car and I had to grit my teeth to accept run flat tires on the E90 ( I have them on a MINI and hate the fact that they provide no road feel). I could accept the lack of an automatic transmission dipstick since it is sealed and doesn't 'burn' oil. The absence of a crankcase dipstick is another matter, especially given the notariety of German electronics and electrical devices.

Wonder if it is feasible to add a dipstick asembly? Benz is shipping some models without a transmission dipstick but with the tube. Go figure! At least one can buy a Benz transmission dipstick from the parts department.

Why do you need a dipstick ?
Just press the correct button and you get a digital readout of the oil level

you can reset the light from within the car

Please note this is what i have been told, and i take no responsibility if it is incorrect

Its something like hold the trip reset button down for 10s till the service functions come on. Then scroll through to what you ant to reset by quickly pressing the trip reset button.

Then when you are at what you want to restet hold the button down till the car asks you to confirm the reset

press to confirm and its done

Dealers reset it via the service computer
