Cheap way to tether iPhone 3G without jailbreak or Netshare

Found this from Francis Wong's site.

He uses his iPhone 3G SIM card and puts it in his old Samsung Sync 3G phone... then can tether his laptop!

So wait... the solution to tether an iPhone is to not tether your iPhone? That's like saying the way to get Safari on my RAZR is to get an iPhone, then put my SIM in it when I want to use Safari.
