Clutch Squealing?

This is definitely a new one for me.

I have a DKM Stage 3 organic clutch in my 335i. Installed January 2024.

Recently, it has been squealing when the clutch bites. It will only do it if I engage it somewhat quickly, if I engage a bit more slow and gentle there is no noise. This noise will also occur on gear changes if I am doing so quickly, like when at WOT for example.

At first I thought it was the belt slipping somehow and swapped the belt and tensioner but no luck.

I am not inclinded to believe it’s the throwout bearing as I can sit with the clutch pedal depressed all day and not have a single noise, it is only when engaging the clutch and it squeals right when it bites.

I have read this can be normal for some twin disk ceramic clutches, but this kit was organic, and has never made this noise until recently.

Any ideas?

Do you have organic or ceramic disks?

I don't know what I did to get this sound.

I did the proper break in, maybe not enough. few hundred km city drive to bed the flywheel and pressure plate.

I did not track nor drag it. in 1500km I did 1 and only 1 launch (clutch drop on launch control @ 3600rpm) and it was fine. Did this around 1300km on the clutch.

The 1st time it squeek, it scared me, thought a cop was whistling me !

You can send this vid to DKM, Ive recently communicated with them stating that their clutch busted my golf R engine (crank walked) and I had not 1 but 7 VW/audi/bmw/porsche specialist advice that was in fact related to DKM.

Had some good argument, and now they ghost me. a 13k $ fun clutch upgrade.

Seems like the n54 is stronger , and an aggressive clutch wont be an issue.

car has now 121 000 km

so 3500km in.

not a huge difference, but still, started to do this only few km ago.

I’m fairly aware of the issues with DKM proposed by the MK7 community but I have yet to find any substantial claims. I would not believe it’s the fault of the DKM.

Even DSG owners have experienced crank walk. Southbend, BFI, and stock clutch users have all also suffered crank walk. I believe that the EA888.3 simply just is prone to crank walk given the right conditions.

it's not DKM fault , I agree, however when this issue started to rise, they should have warn.
Higher pressure on the crank, weaken the thrust bearing and they fall.

I did not claim anything to them, simply told my story, finds and 7 specialist advise, and they told me ''this is new for them''. yeah right , there's a long thread om mk7 forums, and indy shop sent back hundred clutchs to DKM.

They proposed to inspect my clutch, and requesting more info, and they ghosted me.
If they dont warn, I do, Ive reported this in few forums.

DSG and even 1.8t have this ''issue'', more rare tho. In fact, people pushing manual EA888 are 99% R owner anyway.

I own the 1st gen 2.0T, and so far, even if the balancer shafts, cam chains and cam follower were a big deal on those engine, nothing like gen2 and now gen3 2.0T . Mine still running strong

Figured I would update you.

I hadn’t driven the car in 3 weeks, I bought an E39 540i M Sport 6MT as a daily (awesome car), and the E92 has been on jack stands while I replaced the rear wheel bearing and axle (took too long because of the hurricane).

I drove the E92 last night and to work this morning and didn’t hear it squeak once, so not sure what’s up with that.

mine does it after a while, in the city. Which brings me to think this sound come only when the disk and plates are hot, which means I very might have a hot spot probably on the center floating plate.

Hot spots are hard and slippery like glass. This is not ideal, but very common on clutchs plates and flywheel.

Caused mainly by people who dont know drive clutch or have way too much power .

on my side, a clutch is on/off, I dont slip it and Ive removed the clutch delay valve to avoid a maximum of slip. So yeah, probably the 600bhp I'm pushing , might be the organic disk limit.
