Bricked DME with MHD

Hello everyone, posting in main forums for more visibility. Last night attempted to flash MHD tune, had battery tender hooked up like usual. The app froze right at the beginning of the flash and I closed the app and reopened it. Tried to flash again and from this point I was no longer able to contact the DME through MHD nor INPA on my laptop. I have unhooked battery multiple times, kept it on a tender overnight and used different cable instead of my Thor adapter. Looks like she is bricked for sure. Looking for more help before I tow it to the dealer for a replacement... ($$$) 2011 335i N55 MEVD17. Reached out to MHD and a few others so far and nothing.

As I understand it, it’s difficult to actually brick your DME. You will probably need Standard Tools (WinKFP or perhaps Tool32?) and a K+DCAN cable to recover from this one. Yes, you can set up Standard Tools to use your Thor adapter with a laptop, but I wouldn’t do this considering it’s slow and the stakes are high.

If you cannot fix it yourself, there are people who offer remote coding/programming services who might be able to help. If they can’t help, there are people you can ship the DME to who can likely bring it back to life. I could be wrong on a few of these points, but I don’t think you’ll need to replace it outright.

I've had my fair shares of issues with my Thor adapter flashing MHD. I have fallen back to my K+D CAN cable with an OTG usbc adapter and have been able to recover from the failed flash every time.

Honestly I only use my thor adapter for logging and nothing else.

did you email MHD?? I have had the app go unresponsive during a flash and it allows you to try again. A battery tender is not sufficient to maintain a battery during a long flash. If your battery is weak and died not sure how that is an MHD issue.

I am tired of having people tell me you can’t brick youre ecu with MHD.. MHD said the same thing.. than finally sent me a refund for the app/licensing after showing reciept of buying new ecu.

I’m on my 3rd ecu… first one went after car died uninstalling Cobb… had to get it towed to dealer which they couldn’t commute with it for a ecu reflash… so I took it to a Indy they replaced ecu…

Thought I was ok to tune again and bought MHD… well after about 10% it could no longer communicate with ecu… another bricked ecu… another $1200 down the drain.. I’m scared to attempt it again so car is forever staying stock.. not sure if their is some other coding in the cas/some than never got properly reprogrammed after the first brick but yah bothers the hell out of me.

To clarify my comments above, I’m just speaking in general terms. As I understand it, and I could be very wrong, it’s possible to recover from failed flashes more than dealers and other “experts” would have you believe. But I have zero experience with MHD and lack the technical understanding of how it might different from, say, flashing a software update or a tune for my N52.

That sucks you’re on your third DME though, jesus…

Hi guys, been a hectic few days but here's an update: I had the car towed to an indy and they are removing DME and CAS to be sent to BimECU for recovery along with keys. MHD Support referred me to this company and apparently they have 100% success rate. Hopefully should get the car back this week. Yes, the car was definitely bricked. I had a remote recovery service attempt a recovery and they could do nothing.

Can you update on what happened? I’m assuming the vehicle was able to start and run after they fixed the ecu but str they’re any corrupt modules or any other weird stuff like your cluster acting weird, clicking sound, wipers got abnormal, getting an engine malfunction warning that outs it into limp mode but after a restart the limo mode goes away and drives right? I was having this issue after a bricked ecu as well.

I just found this by googling. Happened the same thing to me. MHD bricked my ECU. Did you end up having to get a new ECU?

Hi, I had my DME and CAS sent out to Bimmer ECU solutions and they were able to recover it. If not, they can easily clone it. They work directly with MHD tuning and know their away around these cars.

I think the problem isn't MHD but the adapters. The first adapter I ordered was a mess, it was the newest "MHD Universal" red one. Constant issues connecting and trying simple stuff like data logging it would freeze. After way too many emails back and forth with the retailer (bimecu) they reluctantly agreed to send me a replacement. That replacement worked and continues to work perfectly.
