n54 blown motor

I have a 2009 335 e92 with a n54 motor problem. Going up to Mpact in pocono a few weeks ago and the motor stared to smoke so i pulled over on the turn pike in quakertown pa. The check engine lite came on with smoke under the hood. I had it towed back to a local shop were they
ran a compression test and found cylinder 5 had 50psi withe the rest good. They put a camera inside and saw the piston cracked across the top. Any idea what would cause this and who could recommend a place to fix it. The car only has 45k on the clock, and in excellent condition with no accidents. Thanks Brian

Unfortunately, your cheapest option is to find a nice used more and swap it. You aren't going to find anyone who will rebuild that motor (especially if there is damage to the cylinder wall) for less that a used engine is going to cost you.

if you never upgraded the n54 injectors due recall, then their early version are prone to leak and one of them simpy burnt your piston
thats why any new n54 owner should check if his injectors upgraded by a recall or not

Index 12 injectors can leak, go lean, or have spray pattern and flow issues.....just like all the other index injectors.

What oil were you using on the car? I wonder if it was LSPI, i assume you weren't hammering on the car when the piston cracked.

blown motor

I use liqui moly and change every 5k. I was going to Mpact on the turn pk at 75 mph. I can't find anybody that would have a motor for it. Thanks for the reply.

blown n54 motor

How come all the shops i went to don't trust any of these places to get a motor from. They don't want to install a motor they don't know history on. Plus the cost of labor to install. I think I'm going to try and sell the car, very disappointed in the car.
