Am I asking too much for my 2011 e90 m-sport?
Hi enthusiasts,
I listed my 2011 e90 m-sport for sales in FB marketplace. Interested buyers keep offering $5k-6k. I know I’m very try attached to this baby, but need to let it go for in other to care for a family member. I just want it to go to someone who’d appreciate and care for it like I’ve done for 12-13 years. What does this community think is a fair price in the Bay Area? Listing and some pics below. Thank you! 2011 bmw 335i m-sport listing |

Good looking car, with a great build! IMO the high mileage is what's hurting you. Doesn't mean you're asking too much, but casual buyers won't touch anything with that mileage, and enthusiasts only want a deal. So you're stuck between those two groups, trying to find the perfect buyer.
I'd emphasize the adult driven & long term ownership and put together a spreadsheet with all the maintenance listed. Add pictures of the engine bay, video of it running, clear of codes, and with a smog cert. Someone on the fence but scared of the mileage could be appeased a bit with that. Include documentation or mention if/when the auto trans has been serviced. Is the suspension refreshed? How about the cooling system (water pump, expansion tank, radiator, hoses) done? OFHG, valve cover, oil pan gaskets done when? These are all things enthusiasts will want to know and will help get them on board. If the above hasn't been done, well, that's another conversation... My stereotypical take on the Bay Area is everyone is a rich tech bro, or just getting by month to month. So they either buy new cars and don't have any use for used ones, or are getting the cheapest and most reliable car they can. Neither group wants a nearly 15 year old high mileage BMW. So look to see what similar mileage cars are going for, add in a bit for the M Sport and maintenance history, and be patient. Good luck! Last edited by StradaRedlands; 09-07-2024 at 06:44 PM.. |

If it hasn't sold, then either you are asking too much, or you are marketing it incorrectly. Or both.
I vote that you are asking too much given the mileage and spec of the car. Too many miles, too much autotragic, too much turbo, wrong number of doors (needs either one more or two fewer).

Yeah even though your car looks to be very well taken car of, unfortunately E90s just don't hold their value that well. Mileage is a bit high for a turbo bmw so it does make sense that you are getting offer for around 6K.
A friend of mine bought a 2007 with i think he said 110K-ish for $4000. I do think he had to put a bit of money for the OFHG but not too far off. |

- not everyone is a rich tech bro - there is gap between lower and high income population - very few have older germans and available space to DIY it. - shop labor cost here is nuts ($225/h or more) Speaking as 24 years San Francisco resident myself - I am probably somewhere in between of low and high income and more of exception where I got stuck with E9X era, some extra evidence here https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2132112

Thanks StradaRedlands and everyone. You’re all on point. I wasn’t trying to be greedy but I think I was being unrealistic.
My local service advisor has agreed to send me zip file of all maintenance. At this point, no need to be greedy or unrealistic. I appreciate all the comments! |

i would also to add that IMO, the pictures of the start stop button and CIC controller showing not what people expect for 10k
so i would advise to get label for button or button from aliexpress and try to paint controller if you have skills for it or remove these pictures. the buyer will see parts when he will be more interested and in the same time, may be he will think that these will be easy fix

Yes maintenance records and not just oil changes. I didn't see if the motor mounts, oil pan gasket, water pump thermostat, strut, shocks, and maybe more. Most try to list their car prices at the highest in KBB because it's clean.. The Highest price in KBB is with all the maintenance that needs to be done already done. If you are selling for 10k them price out the parts I listed plus labor. At a dealer I will be more than 5k. You have the M sports bumpers which should be worth more. That is your advantage.

I don't think waiting five weeks is an excessive amount of time to have a car up for sale. Depends on if you NEED to sell or are just looking for a change. I'd ignore the low ballers on FBM as they likely aren't serious buyers anyhow and are probably just cruising around FBM sending low offers to multiple people just to see if someone is desperate enough to bite.
Like the other guys here have stated: Get those maintenance records into the ad and cover the basic questions that are in any "E90 N55 buyers guide." That will help any one who is an enthusiast feel comfortable with your car. If you're still not getting interested then I'd slowly lower the price a bit every 7-10 days and see what happens. Often times it just takes a while for someone to appear that matches your ideal buyer profile. On the other hand, I have had luck with just dumbing down my ads sometimes. There is a point at which some people just shut down and think that the ad is too complicated. You can always send those maintenance docs to people when they ask for them. You will get more tire kickers this way, but some of them might bite and at least come to look at it. Don't expect to get your asking price, because everyone wants to feel like they are getting a bit of a deal, but to me that range is like 20% below asking max. If every other 335i in your area is in the $5-6k (asking) range then you're going to have a hell of hard time hitting that number. Up here in Canada I'd expect to see an asking price of about $8-12k CDN ($6-9k USD) for a car similar to your 335i. Also keep in mind that the used car market is deflating and car prices have taken a turn downwards over the last two years, so don't expect what you were seeing at the peak of the asset bubble a couple years ago. |
