Aluminum TTY bolts are ONLY REQUIRED to be used where the bolt contacts Magnesium Alloy, as Steel corrodes Magnesium. The cylinder head is Aluminum, NOT Magnesium Alloy. So Steel (re-usable) bolts are used to hold Valve Cover to Aluminum Head. Simple use of a Magnet will confirm Steel Bolt.

The CRANKCASE or block is Magnesium Alloy. So Oil Sump bolts which go into the Magnesium Alloy are Aluminum TTY. Same for bolts holding Aluminum Head to Magnesium Alloy Crankcase (Aluminum TTY).

Early E9x models, Pre-2007, used Magnesium Alloy Valve cover. Those engines require aluminum bolts to prevent corrosion of Magnesium VC, as I understand it.

Steel bolts/screws are NOT TTY & may be re-used. Use magnet to confirm if bolt is steel. Also, Blue paint MAY identify an aluminum TTY bolt.

Further confusing the issue is the fact that many parts suppliers sell Kit for VC replacement with new bolts. ISTA does NOT suggest replacement of any bolt OTHER than Aluminum TTY. The ISTA AZD Torque Spec clearly provides for "Replace Screw", as well as TTY angle, IF an Aluminum Bolt. A call to your BMW Parts Counter SHOULD confirm that. Don't ask an SA.

It appears that per the recall procedure (at least in CA), same as in 2014 RCRIT:
1) If any loose or broken bolt(s) are found on inspection, VANOS Unit on that cam is to be replaced;
2) Dealer did NOT have VANOS Unit on hand, and had to ORDER;
3) ALL 8 VANOS bolts (4 per cam) replaced;
4) Exhaust VANOS Unit NOT replaced, as NO original bolts were broken/loose.

NOT Stated in Invoice:
Whether only ONE bolt at a time was replaced in Exhaust VANOS. That is clearly required in 2014 RCRIT. If someone would take the time to identify the parts (by part#) listed on invoice and determine if any R-CRIT requires replacement of each part listed, that would be helpful.

ANYONE in US who has VANOS Bolt Recall performed, PLEASE ASK FOR COPY or URL for any RCRIT for Recall 23V-707 (2023 recall). If they state, IN WRITING, that 2014 RCRIT is followed, that's OK.

Not sure if anyone posted this update. My car is in the shop now, shop foreman gave me some b.s. that they were fishing the broken bolts out from the top and didn't need to drop the oil pan.

Just found that the cabin air filter housing in my engine bay is broken a couple weeks after recall work was done. Don't want to deal with the dealership, (1 1/2 hours away) just ordered a new one on FCP euro. The plastic was probably brittle...

Wish they would have at least told me they broke it.

Okay, so my 2010 330i M is booked in for next Monday afternoon, hopefully no nasty surprises. I am also going have them fit a new eccentric shaft sensor while the valve cover is off - there is some traces of oil in the plug which is either from a leaking gasket, or the sensor itself, can't seem to figure which. Will update during and after all of this is done.

Not sure what is going on

I had an appointment for yesterday at 7:30am for this recall, the airbag recall, and an annual state inspection.

Dropped my wagon off the day before, as 7:30am is before my beauty sleep ends. They checked it in yesterday morning, I got the status tracking e-mail with lots of pictures of my car around 9:30am. Today it has updated to "Your Review Needed Soon", and not complete. It's now 5:30pm so they have had the car two full days. No big deal, I have lots of cars but seems odd for what is a somewhat time-consuming but ultimately simple job. Hoping I get the bonus plan of needing the oil pan to come off, but with only 55K miles and no obvious signs of trouble I doubt I will get that lucky.

Just hoping it's done by Friday, as Sunday I was planning to take it to a car show that the local BMWCCA chapter is attending.

All done.

Turns out, we had a failure to communicate - the dealer had my work desk phone as my cell phone, and had been texting to it to tell me the car was done.

All set though, no loose/sheared bolts, they did the spark plugs along the way for the price of the plugs , and inspecticated to keep the state happy for another year. And conveniently, since it sat in storage all summer, the inspection is now due at the END of the summer rather than my having to rush around to get it done as soon as I get back in Maine for the summer. Bonus plan.

And my car does not have a Takata grenade airbag, as they did that recall inspection too. She's ramped and stamped and ready to go to sleep for another winter. I put a mighty 1240 miles on since the last inspection in July 2023.

So, my car was booked in this afternoon for this recall, and I have supplied a new Eccentric Shaft Sensor to be fitted as preventative maintenance since I have spotted some oil in the plug. Hopefully no snags, and I have asked them to keep me updated and send pics if possible. Will update when I hear anything!

Wow, I would definitely push them for updates, especially if they've possibly run into issues! Hope you can get an update soon!

Wow a week. My dealer took about 6 hours and I got the car back on the same day.
