"Alice" was on MeTV the other night, watched a couple of episodes.
Mel being the male chauvinist, and Alice getting wrongly picked up as a
prostitute, along with two others. The other two, where the nicest and
cleanly dressed prostitutes (as depicted on TV during that time). Even
loaned Alice $25 for her bail!

Strange that people think All In The Family wouldn't be airable today. It was the product of liberal writing and basically took ironic aim at an ill-informed bigot. Archie was more often the butt of jokes than the other way around. But Meathead was skewered quite a bit for being overzealous.

My absolute favorite memory of AITF was when Archie got himself locked in a cellar and thought he would die. Meanwhile he found some liquor and got drunk and started to talk to God. About that time a figure (obviously Afro-American) appeared from above (the top of the stairs) with light shining from behind. Archie exclaimed, "Jefferson was right! You are black", from his knees.

It was the maintenance guy who found the door locked. Still makes me smile.

I think the reason it might not be airable now is because it is no longer ok for that stuff to be funny, even with Archie the butt of the jokes. Nowadays, people are expected to be outraged and disgusted about everything. Every episode would need to be about him getting cancelled.

People talk about "cancel culture" like it is something new or one-sided. The earliest memory I have of the concept was when religious "family" groups in the 1970s would organize letter writing campaigns to advertisers for the purpose of getting TV shows, literally, cancelled. I remember thinking that would eventually backfire.

Pendulums swing. We definitely shouldn't be judging our entertainers with the same yardstick as our political leaders. The former's words are to be taken with a grain of salt. The latter's words should be taken at face value.

In either case though, it is a sign of poor judgment to misread and alienate your audience. Today, we have so many outlets that nearly anything can find a place to air. Back then, it was basically 3-5 channels, serving the entire nation.

Cancel culture has clearly advanced to a whole new level, with social media vs. letter writing though. It’s almost instantaneous now, with a lot less effort required. Definitely more widespread today than ever.

Immediate consequences serve as better modifiers to operant conditioning.
