A/C misery
I appreciate these threads, more than words can convey! Hoping one of the experts out there can offer up some troubleshooting tips.
Yesterday during the drive from Chicago to Cincinnati, and I noticed a red battery alert light in the dash. I was about 90 minutes from Chicago, and nearly same distance to Indianapolis. As I pulled off I65, the dash started displaying a barrage of errors, but thankfully I was able to pull into a gas station in Rensleer Indiana. Popped the hood and saw A/C compressor had spilled it metal guts, shredding sepantine belt, and making my return home from an extended weekend getaway to Chicago as expensive as a trip to the Caribbean. Google search led me to a place in Lafayette that could service the car. $280 for a flatbed tow, $160 hotel room, running tab at shop over. $2000 now, $60 for rental car to get my girlfriend home in Newport KY, and a phone call from shop owner saying all new parts installed, but A/C compressor will not activate. He's supposed to take a visual walk through the fuses and rule that out. So my question is this, almost everything in this 2007 E90 has some type of computer module or controller, is there something that needs "reset" to activate the new OEM A/C unit? Shop owner is allegedly from Germany, used to work in the manufacturing process over there, and for an Indianapolis BMW shop before starting his own Indy shop. Which may explain why his reviews on Google were mostly good, but the fact he's pushing 80 years old makes me think that some of these post 1990 vehicles are becoming more complicated for him to keep up with. He's got a goldmine in BMW, Porsche, VW, Mercedes and Audi parts there, too bad he's not open to cataloging and listing those parts that are still in demand. Until then, if anyone has some helpful information regarding powering up a new A/C compressor, I greatly appreciate the advice! |

I've the same problem. Did you find the solution for that?
I've same problem with same engine. Noise disappeared when I remove the drive belt. Noise start's when the engine gets warmed up and running around 2k rpm.
Did you get that sorted? Quote:

I can confirm V3RVN's post. To my knowledge, it's not a BMW part # but you can find the compressor pulley on ebay. It's not super easy to remove the pulley but it works fine if the compressor is OK.
In my case, the internals had sheared off the pulley housing and the belt came loose from the engine resulting in power steering loss while driving. I would definitely replace it ASAP if it's making noise. |

Thank you so much for this video. My gf's 130i started making the same sound. At first I thought this sounded as rod knock, I was already thinking about replacing the engine etc.. Turned out it was indeed the airco compressor.
