Car smells like gas - leak on fuel sending unit under seat (PICS)

Car started to smell like gas around the rear drive wheel well several days ago. Turns out there is a fuel leak around the fuel sending unit. Looks like the solution is either to replace the fuel sending unit or replace the o-rings. Searched and didn't find a very clear DIY on how to replace the fuel sending unit.

Any idea how long it takes to replace the fuel sending unit? I was told it needs to be replaced and will cost around $100 in labor (or 1 hr or so).

Thanks!

See the videos at the bottom of this page: http://www.fuel-it.biz/e-series-135i...2-lpfp-upgrade

You don't need the "special tool" for the lock ring, just use a hammer and flathead.

Same thing happen to me about a year ago. That unit under the driver side rear seat is called the fuel pressure regulator. Mine had a tine crack on the top and would leak out gas. I just bought a new one on ecs and no more leaks. It's pretty easy to install. And a new one is not too expensive only $175. Here is where I bought mine.

I stop by my local pick-a-part junkyard about once a month to see what odd parts I can find for any of my cars. They always have at least 3-4 E90s present and the last few times I've gone there I noticed that every one of them had the fuel pumps (passenger side?) and regulator (drivers side) removed.

I guess this is a relatively common failure. Considering that, I know I'd prefer to install a new one rather than a junkyard part.

I only smell fuel in my garage after topping off my tank, letting the auto-shutoff on the pump activate. I will smell fuel around the passenger side rear wheel well, same side as the fuel door. The last few times I've fueled, I approximated the volume of fuel needed to fill and stopped just before it was full, and didn't smell anything.

Loss of power limp mode

Just had exact issue. After replacing mine I now don't have relief pressure when fueling. Before it always had the relief when unsrewing fuel cap. It throws it in limp mode when I press gas hard.

( side note. I had to replace starter at the same time. Or could los of power be from a missed vacuum hose )

The same issue is going on with me I’m going to replace the unit and see if it fixes limp mode when apply good amounts of gas and makes car stink of gas to high hell

Do you guys smell gas inside the car or only outside the car? And if inside the car is it when you are driving or the car is just sitting in the garage?

Not long at all like an hour maybe two tops it's not hard at all and there's some pretty good videos out there I'm actually doing it right now as we speak on my own car what I was wondering is just anybody know what the plug is behind the maintenance door it's like a little plug that you can drain thru I looked on real OEM and I can't find a number it's directly towards the back right behind the maintenance door to the fuel pressure regulator it's like a little circle on the ground

Got it thanks. I’m having this really strange occurrence where the inside of my car kind of smells like hand sanitizer when I get in it. But it’s only when the car has been sitting for awhile and not being driven. I think it must be the plastics/rubbers deteriorating rather than something going on with the fuel system leaking.
