Coolant drained from radiator and thermostat but only 1 gallon came out

Drained the coolant on my 2011 E93 335i with an N55 engine and a ZF 6 speed automatic transmission.

Removed the intercooler (luckily it's stock so not too hard) and drained through the radiator drain hole. Plugged that back up and removed the hose on the thermostat housing (the hose facing the back of the car, between the frame and sway bar, that has a U shaped spring clip holding it, not the hose toward the front of the car with the worm drive hose clamp on it). Ended up draining around 1.2 gallons instead of the expected 2.25 gallons.

Should I have also drained the heat exchanger as suggested in this thread? Or is there another trick to get the full 2.25 gallons (or at least close to it)?
