Thank you Freddie Freeman
Thank you Freddie. Not only did his walk-off grand slam win Game 1 for the Dodgers, it did something else really important. It took away the silly notion that Kirk Gibson's famous home run was the greatest moment in Dodger history. Finally after 36 years, we can put that Gibson moment in proper perspective; a nice-walk off home run that won Game 1 in the '88 World Series. So, Gibson was hobbling. He was paid to hit home runs and he hit one. He hit a home run in something like 16% of the games in which he played in his career. To me, the only thing that made that home run truly memorable was Vin Scully's call of the play.
Now, after today's amazing walk off grand slam, we can reduce Kirk Gibson's moment of fame from the greatest moment in Dodger history and again think about truly amazing feats like Sandy Koufax's perfect game or the Dodgers sweep of the Yankees in '63 or Fernando's first 8 games of his major league career, or 20 or 30 events more important that Kirk Gibson's moment. |
