Window switch lighting issues
If the lights for the window switches are not working, both front and rear, except the drivers side rear window lock button (green light), where would you look for the fault? Is there a fuse that controls those lights? I will be happy to provide any info that might help. For example, other lights not working are, but limited to, the steering wheel buttons. I have the performance steering wheel the other lights work, just not the normal ones near your thumbs. This is very frustrating! Thanks in advance for any info!

Dimmable Locator Lights, 2007 335i
Try changing brightness of lighting powered via the "58G" circuit from the FRM Module per the
two different ISTA SSP wiring diagrams attached. Use the B/C buttons on Turn Signal Stalk. That's the two Grey/Red wires coming from the FRM Module (A4011) at Connector X14259, Pin #21, and Connector X14261, Pin #48. Please let us know what you find. George |

Instrument & Locator Lighting, Brightness Adjustment
Actually, I may have provided TMI.
To keep it simple, I would refer to your Owner's Manual Index: "Instrument Lighting". That refers to page 81 in my Manual for 2007 328xi E91. If you don't have the Manual for your particular E9x, you can download a pdf that is EXACTLY the same as the original paper manual from this (OFFICIAL) BMW site. NOTE: this is NOT a knockoff, bootleg, piracy, etc. and contains ONLY the information BMW wanted its original owners to know: https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html If BOTH the Steering Wheel Switch lighting, AND the Driver Door Cluster lighting (NOT including the Green LED for rear window Lockout which is separate system) are too "DIM" or totally off, you MAY be able to correct that by performing the simple "Setting" procedure using the BC buttons on the turn signal indicator, as described in the Owner's Manual: "Instrument Lighting". Make SURE you have either parking lights or headlights (Low Beam) on. Note whether (1) you are unable to change the setting as far as the indicator on the Instrument Cluster shows, OR (2) the Cluster shows you are changing the setting, but the brightness of the locators does NOT change. Although there is NO single fuse identified with this "58G" circuit, and the available Documents do NOT show which of the Four (4) Fuses supplying power to the FRM Module relates to the 58G circuit, I would next check each of those 4 fuses. IF your 335i was built AFTER 3/1/2007, the fuses to check would be F36, F41, F42, F68. IF you have EARLY 2007 model built BEFORE 3/1/2007 (check sticker on bottom of driver doorjamb at B pillar) those fuses are: F36, F41, F52 & F53. EDIT: I just realized you said (via edit while I was composing my epistle ;-) you had tried to adjust brightness per Manual. So unless you missed the part about having the lights on during adjustment, if there is NOT a bad fuse at one of the 4 locations above, you really need to get any Fault Codes AND Freeze Frame Data saved in the FRM (Footwell) Module read. If you don't have INPA, ISTA or a Scan Tool that can read Fault Memory of the FRM Module, your nearest Advance Auto or Autozone SHOULD be able to at least read codes. When you post back, please provide Build Mo/Yr OR Last-7 characters of your VIN so we can make sure we have right Data for your specific vehicle. Please let us know what you find in those tests, and we can suggest Next Steps. George Last edited by gbalthrop; 11-18-2020 at 01:36 PM.. |

I checked your VIN in ISTA, and the TWO ISTA Diagrams I attached to Post #4 are correct for your vehicle.
If adjusting brightness or checking the 4 fuses did NOT correct the issue, then I would check EACH of the 11 or 12 (depending upon equipment) different locator lights identified in the two ScreenPrints of the SAME ISTA wiring diagram, and identify WHICH, if ANY, of the ~ 12 components to which Gray/Red wires run in the diagram are lighting at all. For any which actually DO light, is their brightness affected by changing Setting as described above? Also, when you attempt to increase/decrease brightness using the B/C Buttons on the turn indicator stalk, does the Instrument Cluster display change setting (number of squares) as it should, or is there some defect in the Setting Procedure? The way I would approach it is to compare the Lights that DO light with the wiring diagram, and try to determine, if there is an open circuit somewhere, the exact location of that. If ALL of the lights are totally out, and all four FRM Module fuses are OK, then there is an issue at the FRM Connector(s) OR within the FRM itself. Please let us know what you find; I know you're busy. Stay safe, George |
