Spark Plugs

Hi Guys,
Bmw 328xi/80k Miles
Jus started happening today.
Checked and got a P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire alert on my OBD and the car has a rough start idle as well.

Any thoughts on root cause? I am thinking replacing spark plugs. Can you also provide which specific spark plugs I should get? Would you recommened replacing the coils as well?

You didn't provide a history on the current spark plugs for your car so I'm guess you have never changed them. I also assume the same is true for the coil packs on your car. Is this correct?

Since you didn't post the year/engine code for your car we can't tell you exactly which spark plugs your car will need. Most of the time the Original Equipment spark plugs are from either Bosch or NGK depending on your specific car. Go on a site like FCP Euro and order the OE plug for your car. The OE plug will be the same as the BMW Original Equipment spark plug it just won't have the BMW logo on it so you will save money, but get the same quality parts.

Same thing for the coil packs, they are likely to be bosch or Delphi units. I recommend replacing the coil packs every 50K as preventative maintenance on non-turbo cars.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. It's a 2011 328XI AND owned it since around 50k (now it's at 85k), and that's correct, I haven't replaced the coils or sparks since I purchased the car. I am waiting delivery on these. https://www.autozone.com/external-en...store_set=true

Do you recommend I replace the ignition coils as well? If so, can you recommend which ones?

If you are in Calif then first check the SULEV warranty. The plugs and coils may still be under emissions warranty. Have them look at the valve cover gasket and valve cover as well, a common oil leak spot.

Otherwise Bosch coils fail prematurely and should be avoided.

So yes you need to replace the ignition coils, especially if they are still the Bosch that came from the factory. There were discussions that BMW superseded the Bosch coils over to Delphis.

The NGK plugs are $9.15 each, you might as well order both from Rock if yours has not arrived from Autozone.
