335i N54: Strange Noise at Idle + Limp Mode Issue After Sport Mode

Hello everyone!

I’m fairly new to the N54 platform. I bought a 335i with the N54 engine a couple of months ago and recently took it on a 1,500-mile road trip. The car performed flawlessly, but I encountered a couple of issues.

After a fuel stop, I noticed a strange, loud noise when the car was in neutral and idling. I recorded a video of it here: (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zhK...?usp=drivesdk)

There’s also another issue: after a cold start, I drove in “D” for about 5–7 minutes, then switched to sport mode and revved to the redline. At that point, the car began vibrating heavily and went into limp mode. However, after turning the car off and restarting it, everything was back to normal. I suspect this could be due to carbon buildup, as the previous owner mentioned doing a walnut blast about 60k miles ago.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

You need a code reader

Hello, if you have any long term plans to keep and maintain the "E" chassis, you are going to need to invest in some form of diagnostic aid. Best case is a laptop, USB ODB2 dongle and standard software tools. (INPA, ISTA, etc.) There are also several great phone app based solutions. (Bimmerlink, Protools, etc.)

The limp mode would have generated error codes that will help you and the community determine a best course of action, with the least expense to you.
