Catted Down Pipes

I have been searching for a while and haven't found exactly what i am looking for. I need to know if there is a company that makes CARB legal High Flow Catted down pipes. From the search I have done below are the three options that i am looking at. I would really like to know the thoughts of the community. The car in question is a 2007 335i n54 E92 and currently has catless down pipes and I need to make her legal again but with an eye on performance. I also added a stock set off of ebay strictly for a price point perspective.

The only CARB legal downpipes are the OEM ones. An option would be to gut some OEM ones and run the DP fix, but besides that there isn't any reputable shop that will smog it with aftermarket DP's even if they're catted.

dont waste your money on catted downpipes

catless and run dp fix or stay oem

I have the AR ones, they just throw codes after a few months like you have catless and then you have to do dp fix anyway, so not worth spending a dollar on aftermarket cats.

No such thing as CARB legal aftermarket Catted Downpipes.

That being said if you have a catted downpipe and it has no CEL, it should still pass inspection in most states.

CARB is only for California. California Air and Resources Board. In California, especially nowadays almost nothing is legal. Waiting for them to ban human's breathing....

Thanks for the response guys, so as of right now I am deciding between the COBB or the Tuner DP's. I have a JB4 tune so the software should help me with the codes.

this is incorrect. CARB is for california or states that follow CARB rules. For example 15 other states like New York and New Jersey follow CARB rules.

to the op,

yes as others stated aftermarket cats are waste since no one is going to spend the money to become CARB certified.

you can just put back the oem ones when you need to smog, but it does get expensive if your paying a mechanic to uninstall and reinstall every 3yrs.

Yes and no.

The 15 other states that follow CARB rules only follow the definition of emissions standards set by CARB.

However, their protocol for inspection differ a lot state to state.

I'm not going to get into the debate of what states do what or what you can get away with for liability purposes.

But let's just say there are states that some things you can get away with legally through loop holes and some states that you can't.

1 example is in some states as long as your vehicle passes OBD inspection and readiness, there is no sniffer or no visual inspection. In this example, that state may in fact be part of CARB but the inspection differs greatly compared to California inspection.

So for all intents and purposes here, as long as the OP doesn't live in CA or a state with strict inspection such as sniffer/visual, he may be able to get away with a high flow catted downpipe so as long as he passes OBDII inspection.

If he is still looking for a CARB legal catted downpipe it will not exist unless it's the OEM catalytic converter for this platform, at this time.

Magnaflow does make some 48 49 and 50 state legal catted headers/downpipes but not for this platform, yet.

hey guys just an update to close out this thread, i have decided to keep my car as is with the AR catless Dp's. Especially since I just found out that the coupes have a second set of cats under the car.

Yes, they do, although they are not monitored by the vehicle or required by law.

Question Mods for my 2008 335i

I am from California which is strict with emmisions. The car is being passed down from my dad which the car only has 79k miles on it. I wanna put on some downpipes but apparently post's on here are saying it won't pass smog. Is there anyone who knows where I can maybe find any CARB approved downpipes and a new exhaust system or just any that could maybe be able to pass smong. I wanted to maybe tune it a little so my paddle shifters are a little fasters with no lag and maybe my car perfect but then I also heard that tuning your bmw wont pass smog. Last but not least, I also wanted to maybe play with my engine a bit and maybe change the charge pipe and also wanted to get intercoolers for the car. Is there anything I could put on that could make my car go from 300 hp to almost 400 horsepower.

Just in general. I want someone to help me with suggestions with what I should put on to make it look nice and a little faster than stock. It already has twin intake. I am willing to spend most 4 or 5 k below if that is even possible.

Im pretty sure catless and high flow downpipes will not pass emissions. You would have to either *cough* know someone, or get it registered in a county that doesn’t require emissions. When i was living out there i got a jb4, intake, and a walboro 450 and ran map 7 with 50/50 e85. Made just under 400 whp. Costed me like $700. You can run a 5 inch fmic too, im 99.99% sure they wont give a crap.

Is there maybe a list, where anyone or SlowE92 can give me a list of maybe parts that I could be able to put on my 2008 335i that are CARB or EO approved or or if not any of those 2. Something that can pass and make my car sounds really good when started up and give a little more horsepower that wouldn't be illegal but legal in California. I am also currently 16 and will be driving by next year when I also turn 17 so. I really don't know much about beamers. I know a lot about others cars but recently I just started researching about the beamer and don't know what I can possibly do to make it have a good sound and a little more horsepower.

Brother, if you haven’t started driving yet then you are not ready for 400 hp yet. When i was your age i was happy with my 220 hp wrx lol. Drive the car stock before upgrading performance, 300hp/300tq is a lot, arguably more than enough for first time drivers.

I shall listen to the Elders. One more question. Maybe in the future I might add some stuff on but I just want to ask if there is anything I can do to maybe make it sound just a little louder. I really wanna be able to hear the twin turbo and the intake which my dad put on the car when he bought it. I also wanted to change my Charge pipes if that is a good idea. Apparently its only good to change them when they leak , explode or when you are running a higher boost on the car.

all the info is all over the web, imo learn and slow progress in power is good advice and imo never turn off traction control. more intake noise bms dci (carb legal) and bms cowl filter.

in ca i just get used to installing dp fix (for catless dp) and swapping cp (may get away with oe diverter type pipe) every 2 years

You can get an exhaust from VRSF for a good price and they sound pretty good. Imo Eisenmann and Dinan sounds the best but are a little pricier, especially Eisenmann. However the noise restrictions in california are quite strict.

Is there anything I can do to be able to hear the most out of my turbo and Twin intake when drive ig or Rev it. or does the exhaust already help. I honeslty plan in the future to get a new charge pipe aluminum, Cat back VRSF exhaust for E92 and a new intercooler from either Cobbs or VRSF. I think that's honesly all I need. Is there any paddle shifter that would maybe look good cause I wanna get a carbon fiber one but I don't know what brand to get one from. Also the shifting is really weird, They honestly should've just done left is downshift and right it upshifts. When I do get an intercooler, should I get a bigger one like a 5 inch or something or should I just keep it same size as stock. I dont know what the stock size for the intercooler even is.

Tbh you wont hear much turbo spool until you go catless and even then its not much, the stock snails are small. I didnt get loud turbo spool until i upgraded to 19T’s and was catless. Exhaust will make it sound more aggressive and the 5 inch fmic is carb legal. Anything larger and youre rolling the dice. You can get an aluminum chargepipe with a bov but thats more for just the noise and doesnt add any performance at stock levels. However you have much to learn as a first time driver and i strongly suggest to drive it at stock power levels and slowly add performance the more comfortable you get. If it was me personally, the first modification i would get is a tune, and a logging tool. And keep up with maintenance. Maintenance is key to longevity.
