N55 interchangeability

I have a 2011 E90 335i that just spun a rod bearing. It sounds like it may have also dropped a valve. In other words, I need a new engine.

I haven't found any definitive answers for this question but how interchangeable are the N55s from different years and chassis? I know that at some point the turbo went from PWG to EWG, so if I just use the old turbo, can I use a N55 from say a 2014 335i? When I was looking for a motor, it seemed like there was a difference in the motor going from production dates in 2010 and 2011 for the 2011MY. I suspect that maybe the oil pans might be different especially if you get a motor from a different chassis.

As far as I can tell, I can only buy a N55 produced in 2010 since my car was manufactured in 2010 and be 100% sure it will work. However, if I can get a N55 for other years, it would greatly improve my options. Maybe I could go a little newer with a N55 from a 2015 M235i for instance.

Thanks for your input!

It would be cool to swap the N55 from a M2 if it would work.

A N55 block is a N55 block. You might have to transfer everything over from your block, turbo, oil pan, oil filter housing etc. But it is still the same block. Closer to your original build year less that needs to be swapped.

Good time to have this problem as a member is doing this exact swap on the n55 engine forum side. Follow his build. Ask him questions. Work with him. He is very knowledgeable. Since you both are doing the same thing it would be wise to contribute and share knowledge

There are a few components that are not direct swaps like fuel pump from the f platform. So you have to do some homework.

Does anyone know specifically what would need to be done to use the M2's N55 in a E90?

I’m currently swapping a n55 from a 2014 335i into my e92. I’m swapping over the entire pwg system including the vacuum pump and turbo, ect. So essentially I’m just using it for the block and head. So far everything has matched including motor stands and other brackets. But one thing that looks off is the bell housing bolt holes. The pattern is the same and the bolts are the same but noticed two nipples on the new motor while the old one has one. I’m wondering if I can remove the one that doesn’t match? If anyone knows anything about them or know how to remove them lmk.
