Technician told me he needs to pull the FRM before Gearbox reset.

Is it true that the FRM module needs to be disconnected before a gearbox adaption reset?

Apparently they have had it in the past where the FRM has been bricked?

Why are you resetting the adaptations?

I had mine reset once using protools after doing a full ZF solenoid replacement and fluid change. They did not touch the FRM.

However, I had a lot of issues with my transmission slipping in 4th to 5th gear it because I wasn't told about the post reset driving procedure. I think I would've been just fine had they not reset it.

Had a torque converter overhauled and then the adaptions reset.... but was as you not told about the the post reset learning. Ive done 50% of the learning and found it beneficial. I want to perform the reset and immediately conduct the learning.

Ive got inpa so planned on resetting and then plodding through the learning process.

Just please make sure you complete the entire procedure before going WOT, I did some serious damage to my D and E clutches because I skipped it. I ended up doing a second flush & adaptation reset via protool along with following the complete procedure from BMW on a desolate road and have had no issues since.

But overall, from my experience I never needed to touch the FRM and it was fine. I do have FRM1, so perhaps FRM2 or FRM3 may have an issue, but I have never heard of such thing.

Unfortunately it's common for the newer versions of the FRM (FRM2/3) to suddenly fail for no obvious reason. Sometimes it happens when the battery on the car is disconnected/reconnected or if the battery is on its way out, or while you're doing programming on the car. Most technicians I've worked with are aware of this and will sometimes avoid disconnecting the battery on the car.

In the US, they extended the warranty, but never really came up with a permanent fix for this issue.
