It's not a great situation, was the hose maybe a bit weak from age? Not really sure why they would have touched a water hose. Mine came back with one of the cabin filter housing tabs broken off, it was weak and hanging on by a thread, and despite me asking them to work carefully and not break anything, they managed to get that right. Note that I had been able to remove and refit this in the condition that it was in several times without breaking it. Also one of the screws holding it in place was either lost, or they decided to replace it with one that has a washer permanently attached to it. My OCD immediately spotted that, and luckily I had a spare original screw, so removed that weird anomaly and put things back as it should be, broken tab and all.

I don’t think any thing was old or brittle the car wasn’t leaking even a little when I dropped it off I just find it unfair, and I didn’t mention this to my service advisor but they told me the car was test driven I dropped the car off with zero gas in it with the mileage to next fill not even reading, and when I got it back it was the same

I would consider standing up for myself at this point and just speak up by asking them to cover anything that wasn’t broken before they got the car. If they have the nerve to put it on you then they are pushing you. Time to push back.

I’m starting to prepare for taking the car in soon. This is good information and what I might want to do before taking the car in. One question does the dealer have a problem with replacing the Eccentric Shaft Sensor with a non oem BMW brand? It looks like FCP has the VDO oe and I would much rather go with that to save money…

That's BS. I would escalate. When they broke my CCV hose, they replaced it free of charge during the recall.

I would then push them to cover the repair for this, they also didn't really drive my car afterwards, I always take a pic of the odometer reading before and after, and it had 2 km or less more when I picked it up.

I asked them well before the time, and it seems like they would charge me for half an hour labour regardless of whether I supplied a BMW OEM part or the non BMW OEM brand part from the parts store, still very reasonable. They will give you the old part, so in my case, the old part is actually still fine, it was most likely the gasket that was leaking and the traces of oil in the plug was occasionally causing the odd hiccup.

Ok then I think J’m just going to pull that ESS plug and inspect it for oil and then just make a decision based on my findings. I bet if that ESS was compromised the car would likely run bad all of the time and like you said it just needs a gasket to help it make good contact. We shall see! Thanks Three_Thirty_i 👍🏼. Also I pulled the oil pan and did the oil pan gasket like 9 months ago and if there were sheered bolts I would have discovered them then. The odds are worse case scenario the bolts might just be loose. I’m gonna stop overthinking it and just get it done.

I had this issue back in 2021. The bolts broke and the car would not start and was not drivable. I had the vehicle towed to the BMW dealership and was told the repair cost would be close to 5k CAD because I was past the 10 years. BMW Canada did not offer any help so I had no choice but to pay.

After the repair was done and paid for, my car leaks oil and there's alot of smoke coming from the engine bay while driving and at stops. I constantly have to topup oil and coolant every few weeks now. The car has only been drivien less than 10k KM since the repair almost 3 years ago because of this issue.

Fast forward 2 years later they brought back the recall again so I contacted the dealership asking if it was possible to get reimbursed for the repair done before and was told to bring in the vehicle to check that the work was done and that they would then have to submit the claim to BMW Canada for approval. The vehicle has been at the shop for a few days now and I asked what was being repaired since the repair was already done? I was told they are doing the repair with "updated parts" .

Sounds like I may not be getting reimbursed from the sounds of it. I keep being told this new recall is a different fix/repair. I'll keep you all posted.

Does anyone know if this new vanos recall is any different from the first one?

Took mine in this morning. No broken bolts. They are giving me a new valve cover on the house! You gotta know how to talk to people. 😁

What do you think was key in getting the new valve cover?

I thought it was right there in the recall letter about reimbursement. Contact BMW USA.
