E91 Tailgate Hinge

Hey,

I've tried searching around for a how-to video or even a post on a forum to see if this is a DIY job to replace, with no luck. I have what seems to be the standard snapping of the hinge and was hoping to do it myself.

If anyone has any pointers, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks.

What hinge are you referring to?

Is the spring for the hatch glass hinge broken?
Or is the whole hinge?

The hinge is held onto the body with 2 13mm nuts located under the headliner. You remove the hatch seal and pull the headliner down a bit and you can access them.
On the hatch, there is 3 bolts under the wing.
I will post back with more info tomorrow.

It's not the spring itself, but it's the part that links to it on the other side.

I've taken a photo from online and circled the part that's snapped. On mine, it's the section hidden underneath if that makes sense. So the part circled flops about.

If I buy a replacement is it easy to swap and do I have to swap it all? As it looks like parts of it can come away from what looks like a bracket?

Thanks.

The bracket with the 2 t30 bolts is the one bolted to the body of the car. It can separate from the hinge but it has a lot of up and down adjustment,.

If you leave the bracket on the car, you still need to remove the other t30 (or maybe t45) bolt from the hatch. That bolt is under the black plastic trim when you open the glass.

Then you’ll have to remove 2 10mm nuts that hold the glass. The 2 nuts are under the spoiler and that hitch may shoot up because of the spring tension.

I would remove the black trim and spoiler first.
Then remove the t30 bolt holding the hinge to the hatch, remove the 2 t30 bolts holding the hinge to the bracket, then close the glass and remove the 2 10mm nuts. The hinge should wiggle out.

Thank you, I'll have a look and hopefully it's not too tricky.
