Instrument cluster swap (to test) question

I am getting a used instrument cluster off ebay to swap out just the lcd screens between the two, as mine has become unreadable.
My question is: If I take my cluster out and put the ebay one in just to check that its lcd screen is ok (before I break it down and render it unreturnable) would all my original data stay the same for my original cluster when I swap them back in after swapping the screens? Another forum member already answered just swapping the lcds (on bench) would not affect the eeprom data but in that post I didn't ask about actually plugging in the ebay cluster in the car before swapping the lcds. Thanks

if the cluster you plug will have higher milage than your car other modules stored, then they adjust their values to this (highest) new mileage

Yes, I understand but if I take that one out (I am just plugging it in to see if it works) and replace it back with my original cluster will it recognize back my original with all its original modules stored?
In the end all I want to do is swap the little 3" digital screen between the two. I just want to test the ebay one to make sure its good before I tear it down.

you mileage will not be copied back if you got higher one from another cluster

EEPROM is soldered to the back side of the circuit board. The LCD screen is just that, a screen. The EEPROM simply stores details about the VIN and mileage, it doesn’t care what screen is there. Test away and enjoy.

That being said, depending on model year you currently have, newer instrument clusters do have some features that earlier units don’t. My speaker failed and I went through the process of swapping to a cluster that had the Oil temp gauge as well as a few BC menu options my original 06 cluster didn’t have.
