That's my donor car as well. Since the OE 330 is close to max potential the diff was by far the biggest "butt dyno" upgrade, if not actual power upgrade. Way more perceived change than headers or exhaust.

I found a donor this summer, but it was just too hot to go wrenching

I even bought the big 50mm crow's foot tool to get the lock ring off!

I really need to do all the bushings on the back end whilst there... not enthusiastic about that though...

Get the lock ring off? You don't have to do anything like that. 3 bolts on the driveshaft giubo and 3 on the subframe, that's all.
Bushings aren't as bad as they seem if you have the right tools.

Hmmm, I thought there was a big 50mm lock ring involved... but maybe not!
I'm going to need to re-watch some videos!

That big nut removes the input flange from the diff, you wouldn't be removing that except to service the diff, I'm assuming you're buying one that works and doesn't leak. You'll just unbolt the flange from the driveshaft giubo.

I think MT is the answer in all situations, but hey, that's just me!
I absolutely agree, I am not great at driving manual but I have been wanting to get good.

TBH, with MT you don't need to be fast. You can enjoy a lot more aspects of driving, even daily commuting with MT.
Don't get me wrong, fast = good! But I'd rather have a slower MT car than a faster AT car.
My pontification for the day!

OP didn't say it was an xDrive, but sounds like maybe it is from other comments?

If so then I change my vote to xDelete. Not necessarily to make it RWD, but to set it to a much more rear-biased AWD. Best change I made to mine.

Tires
Wheels
Coilovers
Control arm upgrade
3-Stage Intake Manifold
European N52 airbox
Headers
Cat back exhaust/if desired
LSD

In that order. That’s all you’ll need, leave everything aesthetic after that.
