335i transmission problems

Hello E90 post members! Recently, I have had a somewhat major issue with my cars' automatic transmission. I noticed that, when on open throttle (doesn't have to be WOT or in auto/manual shifting), my transmission will not go into 5th gears. When it tries to change gear, the car will jump violently, attempting to go into fifth, to no avail. What I'm noticing is that, when it jumps, the car will say, on the screen infront, that the car is in 5th (my assumption because it will stay where I shifted rpm-wise in 4th) but it's still stuck in fourth. When shifting to 6th, it will go into 6th and downshift into 5th just fine. it did throw a code once when I did multiple WOT pulls the first time it happened to see what was the problem. I recently got a Dinan stage 1 tune and I'm not sure if the tune has anything to do with it. I will be contacting Dinan this week to see if they can help but I was wondering if any other members have had this issue or have insight on the possible issues related to this.
Thank you!

what mileage are you at?

change your transmission fluid. be sure to replace your pan filter and do a transmission adaptation reset once you're done.

your transmission is very likely not shifting into fifth due to a solenoid problem. does it shift into the other gears fine? make sure to replace all six solenoids.

you're kind of killing two birds with one stone by doing both these jobs (easy to do once you get the pan filter off) and your transmission will literally feel and shift like new.

good luck and keep us posted.

Agreed but just do both at the same time. Don't expect that changing the fluid will have any affect. I am getting ready to do the solenoids and wish I had just done both at the same time.

I'm currently at 108k miles. I recently did a fluid change on all fluids so I'm guessing it's probably the solenoid then. I had an issue with two solenoids about 6 months ago and had them replaced so it wouldn't be a shock if they were the issue. Transmission pan and filter were replaced last year in January so not sure but who knows, things can go wrong. Thank you for the insight! But yes, it shifts into all other gears just fine, it only acts up when shifting into 5th

If you are at 60k or more changing the fluid will make a huge difference in shift quality. it seems to also improve throttle tip-in at 2000RPM. I changed mine at 67k. if you mean changing the fluid again then yea.. I wouldnt bother. but everything will be drained once you remove the pan filter in order to service the solenoids so may as well add fresh fluid in there since the old stuff will be a little bit dirty. no point in replacing the pan filter a second time though.

I didnt bother changing the solenoids at this mileage, although I probably should have while the pan was off. I dont think it would make much of a difference at 60k.

Just go ahead and change all your solenoids. be sure to do a transmission adaptation reset when you do. transmission will supposedly feel refreshed and more responsive with new solenoids and your 5th gear issue will 100% be fixed.

What would cause a 2011 bmw 335is coupe change from 6th gear down to 2nd or 1st all at once and throw its self in nuetral and motor reave up all the wayto 4000rpm as long as you dont get past 45 miles an hour it does fine

i’m at 79k miles and changed fluid and filter around 77k i’m still having trans problems such as
1. limp mode codes 4F53 and 2AD0
2. reverse would go act as neutral and just rev up when applying throttle
3. after i hit temps 240F I get a gear sign with ! sign and my car then doesn’t move until i turn off and turn on again and temps go down

i got new sleeves and solenoids i go in tuesday for replacement hopefully this fixes my issue if anyone has ideas please lmk thanks

UPDATE

So picked up my whip from the shop cost me about 450 plus fluids to get the repair done. Turns out the rectangle rubber sleeve that sits above the valve body was cracked down the side, the gap was about the thickness off a pencil…

drove the car and it seems to be driving much better like it’s brand new, will be driving lightly as shifting smoothens out but yeah anyone having similar issues i suggest doing your solenoids and sleeves and fluids/filter first before anything
