I would consider standing up for myself at this point and just speak up by asking them to cover anything that wasn’t broken before they got the car. If they have the nerve to put it on you then they are pushing you. Time to push back.
I’m starting to prepare for taking the car in soon. This is good information and what I might want to do before taking the car in. One question does the dealer have a problem with replacing the Eccentric Shaft Sensor with a non oem BMW brand? It looks like FCP has the VDO oe and I would much rather go with that to save money… |

That's BS. I would escalate. When they broke my CCV hose, they replaced it free of charge during the recall.

Ok then I think J’m just going to pull that ESS plug and inspect it for oil and then just make a decision based on my findings. I bet if that ESS was compromised the car would likely run bad all of the time and like you said it just needs a gasket to help it make good contact. We shall see! Thanks Three_Thirty_i 👍🏼. Also I pulled the oil pan and did the oil pan gasket like 9 months ago and if there were sheered bolts I would have discovered them then. The odds are worse case scenario the bolts might just be loose. I’m gonna stop overthinking it and just get it done. |

I had this issue back in 2021. The bolts broke and the car would not start and was not drivable. I had the vehicle towed to the BMW dealership and was told the repair cost would be close to 5k CAD because I was past the 10 years. BMW Canada did not offer any help so I had no choice but to pay.
After the repair was done and paid for, my car leaks oil and there's alot of smoke coming from the engine bay while driving and at stops. I constantly have to topup oil and coolant every few weeks now. The car has only been drivien less than 10k KM since the repair almost 3 years ago because of this issue. Fast forward 2 years later they brought back the recall again so I contacted the dealership asking if it was possible to get reimbursed for the repair done before and was told to bring in the vehicle to check that the work was done and that they would then have to submit the claim to BMW Canada for approval. The vehicle has been at the shop for a few days now and I asked what was being repaired since the repair was already done? I was told they are doing the repair with "updated parts" . Sounds like I may not be getting reimbursed from the sounds of it. I keep being told this new recall is a different fix/repair. I'll keep you all posted. Does anyone know if this new vanos recall is any different from the first one? Last edited by wethenorth; 10-22-2024 at 06:23 PM.. |

Took mine in this morning. No broken bolts. They are giving me a new valve cover on the house! You gotta know how to talk to people. 😁

Im dropping my car off on the 18th of December for the recall work. My exhaust cam is Bluetooth from the bolts shearing, hoping I can come out of this with a working car honestly.

Update: my car was fully taken care of by the dealership, just drove my baby home after a year of problems and it felt amazing. Just letting people know there is still hope.

These dealerships are so unethical. I had the recall completed 8/28/24. They failed to replace 2 of the 3 gaskets and now 5k miles later it's leaking oil from the VC. They inspected it today and told me the cover is cracked. It was replaced in 2022 (not at dealer). They said due to the age of the vehicle and miles they aren't responsible for the VC and wanted me to pay $1950 plus tax for a new one. Umm no GFY...never again. A free repair costing me time and money now.

This recall is only helpful in as much as it's an admission of failure from BMW NA.
But in terms of making any of us whole with dealers often bumbling repairs, forget about it! I'm not letting the dealer touch my car since I repaired my faulty Vanos bolts myself pre-recall. That's asking for big trouble. When dealer finally called me the other day, the kid had no idea what any of these recall specifics mean. He did give me a BMW NA number to call about getting a reimbursement for my expenses from BMW for my own repairs. I'll try this laughable remedy soon and report how it went. I'll bet they pay me for just the replacement bolts themselves. About $8 parts then. Never mind the BMW VC, ESS, torque angle wrench, special e-torx security socket, plugs, coils, and my careful labor. Whadda-ya bet I get $8? |

I just had 23V-707 recall done a week ago. A few days later I turned on the car for the first time after picking the car up at the dealer and the service engine soon light came on - 2A85 - DME: Exhaust VANOS, activation.
I took the car to my Indy and they found that "someone left the vanos VVT solenoid unplugged." They also advised that I should go back to the BMW dealer and point out that the VCG appears to be leaking. It sounds like the dealer is going to work with me, but wants to see the car first. |
