Ignoring any other factors, it will grind whenever you try to shift into that gear. It 'should' stop grinding once you are in that gear, assuming you don't have worse problems. Eventually, I wasn't even able to get it into 2nd gear, at least not without some brute force that just exacerbated the issue.
