Now I'm confused... I always just hear people talking about "AFE" like they have one products.
their product page shows two sku's... is one good and one bad, or is there another product entirely? |

The dual cone and AFE are going to be on PAR.
There is going to be heat inside of the engine bay regardless of any heatshield. The radiating heat from the head to the heatshield will without a doubt heat up the air residing near the intakes regardless. AFE made a good choice by making the intake heatshield plastic though. Performance of dual cones done properly will be the same as the AFE intakes. One thing everyone needs to consider when comparing the AFE intake VS. all the dual cone setups on dyno's is that majority of people are using garbage air filters while AFE IMO makes the best air filter hands down. Slap on some AFE air filters for the dual cone setups then start the comparisons. Ive seen some setups around here with people running 4" inlet filters going into the stock 2.25" piping. This is far from ideal as far as dynamics go, as these 4" air filters were internally designed to be used with a 4" pipe and nothing else. Yes, some of them come with little rings for adapting them to smaller pipes, but that is just marketing and undesirable. Hope that clears some things up.. --Malek

Here is what I don't understand about the aFe intake vs. dual cones:
The aFe intake has a heat shield, but is not sealed to the snorkel like the stock airbox. Since there is no seal, why would any air travel into the snorkel and blow on the aFe filters? Without scoops on the front of the car forcing air into the snorkel, why would any air travel that way? Wouldnt the aFe filters just suck air from the surrounding zone, which is open to the drivers side of the engine bay? Surely its an easier path for the air to just come from the drivers side of the engine bay than all the way up the snorkel? It seems like the source of air for the aFe filters is going to be exactly the same as the source for regular dual cones. I really want to be wrong about this, because I love the look of the aFe intake. But the engineer in me can't see how they would perform any different at all from regular dual cones. The fact that the snorkel is there pointing at the filters does not mean that is where the air is going to come from. The intake air is going to come from the path of least resistance, which looks like the drivers side of the engine bay. |
