Been a busy few weekend and had some tire issues but can turn my attention back to the boost leak. Also hoping I got my leaky compressor fixed to actually run the leak test.

@montegoblu - as I understand it the rule of thumb is a pull from 3k to 6k in 3rd gear and then a little bit into 4th. DSC should be off. This is probably best if you can swing it. The shorter gears arent as ideal.

You need to record more channels in MHD, you only have a handful. From the looks of it seems like you have a boost leak like me. Can you hear any whistling when driving? I can sometimes. Though as this thread shows replacing wg solenoid vacuum system did help me some. ymmv etc

Alright gang, love the collaboration but I made this thread to focus on my problems...

Unsurprisingly, you probably have a boost leak. Though your boost target seems odd, probably dont use the beta MHD. Also you didnt really say if anything felt wrong with the car?

Anyway, finally got around to doing another leak test and this time was more successful with the smoke machine. Seems like the Turbo-IC pipe is leaking near the joint to the turbo. Guess Ill be looking at aftermarket options. Not super looking forward to installing it right after just putting the FMIC in but cest la vis.

If you have a boost leak, have visually checked and tightened all clamps then you really need to perform a smoke/pressurized leak check to figure out where you're leaking boost. Also seems likely on cars about this age that there may be several culprits causing issues.

Ok back after doing a bunch of travel for work and stuff.

Replaced boost pipe with the ER. Managed to wrestle it in using the silicone couplers without dropping the intercooler too. Unfortunately after smoke testing the leak persists. I forgot to get a new oring though. The boost pipe sits on the turbo fairly loosely and smoke definitely seems to be coming from that joint so I think the oring is suspect. Have a replacement coming tomorrow and get to do the whole process again pretty much.

Really looking forward to making full boost. Car should be a lot of fun

Ok well I'm officially stumped.

Replaced the boost pipe and the turbo/boost pipe oring with an ECS aftermarket one. Definitely felt tighter when pushing it into place.

Smoke test still shows a lot of smoke coming from that joint though. It seems to come from between the turbo and block so its hard to see exactly what's going on. I wonder if the turbo side is gouged or something. Pretty confusing. I'm open to ideas....

Hello. Seems like you tried a few different things so I wantes to come and see if there is perhaps any idea I coumd give.

So is the leak happening between the turbo and part 16?

All of these pipes can be named boost pipes so it can get a bit confusing.

Are you sure the leak test indicates a significant leak at that joint or it just doesn't have anywhere else to escape so the smoke went with the lath of least resistance? Do you happen to hear the wastegate rattle more than usual?

Yep exactly, between part 16 and the turbo. Theres an oring + clip joint similar to the charge pipe. It's either coming from this joint or something right by it.

I'm sure the smoke is following path of least resistance but the smoke tester applies pretty minimal pressure (just a few psi) so not sure it should be smoking so much.

I still need to get some logs after installing the new oring. The car feels a bit snappier on throttle tip in but idk if it feels stronger necessarily.

I think I have a bit of wastegate rattle but it's hard for me to tell how much is normal.

So that new ER pipe you put, does it use these stock crimp style clamps or its a worm gear clamp style.

Maybe it might be essential to drop the FMIC and play with that connection/pipe.

Did you take a look at your wastegate to ensure it's still in one piece?

Little preview of what happened to mine...

The new ER boost pipe uses the same style clip to connect to the turbo and then a silicone/worm clamp sleeve to join to the IC.

Yikes, I've visually inspected the WG best I can and I don't think it looks like yours!

Though I do think the WG is either adjusted wrong or suspect. The car builds a a few tenths of boost pretty much always, even if the target is 0psi.

Running out of ideas on what to check. Car definitely feels down on power once in the rev range.

If anyone knows any BMW mechanics who really know their stuff around LAX Im open to suggestion. Maybe they can at least diagnose the issue. I'm getting a little tired of jacking the car up.
