Chinese carbon fiber hood review

I gave in to temptation on eBay for the relatively inexpensive GTS style E90 carbon fiber hood that is available from multiple sellers. I tried looking for reviews or experiences from other people before pulling the trigger and just couldn't find any info. So I'll share my thoughts for the next person:

TL/DR: It's pretty good and I do recommend it for anybody who wants the CF look.

It took about 4 weeks after I placed the order for it to ship. It came on a literal slow boat from China and was on my door almost 3 months after the day I ordered it. Multiple times during the process I was convinced I was getting scammed but it came through. It was wrapped up in a wooden crate and arrived undamaged.

The install was simple; I used all the existing hardware from my OEM hood and everything went into the new hood as expected. I definitely recommend having 2 people to lift the hood off and set the new one down or you are sure to scratch your fender. Getting the center latch and side pins adjusted correctly took a little time - if they aren't just right you will hear the hood rattle as you drive.

I give it a 9/10 for fitment, I'm actually quite impressed for the price. The gaps are even all the way around and it is the perfect length. There seems to be a taller gap above my grills than with the original hood. Overall, it looks phenomenal in my opinion.

What I might be most surprised about is the apparent functionality of the vent. I am seeing 30-40% lower IATs after installing the hood. Hear me out: I have a VRSF 5" FMIC and before the hood my IATs were consistently 20F above ambient temperature. Now, the highest I am seeing is 16F above ambient while stopped at a light down to 11 degrees above ambient while moving. The vent is placed right behind the radiator and seems to get the hot air out of the hood compartment with airflow through the grill. For reference I also have DCIs installed.

I am sure there are some carbon fiber connoisseurs with impeccable taste that could say this is a cheap quality Chinese knock-off of a name brand hood. But for my purposes it's more than adequate, fits really well and is a great replacement for my fading and peeling OEM hood. In the end it was roughly $1,500 US and I could have bought an aluminum GTS hood for about half the price. But after paint it would have been close to a wash.

If there is anything I didn't answer fire away.
