310bhp Remapped 330D Brake Upgrade Advice

Hello there

So...my dad has recently had his M-Sport E92 330D remapped up to 310bhp with lots more torques (dyno printout available for anyone who maybe at all interested) and the thing is now a bit of a monster!! Only thing is, I feel that the car is a bit under braked. What would you fine people recommend as a good upgrade to remedy this? Without spending ridiculous amounts of money, but also not being cheap.

Many thanks

Stick a set of 335i brakes on the front. I do quite a bit of high speed on the autobahn and never really felt under braked in my 335i. My wife's 328i is another story and this is why I have a set of 335i brakes ready to stick on hers.

Sorry for going off topic but I'm genuinely interested in what he's done to get to 310bhp, is it just a remap or has he done other bits too?

I'm guessing it's the newer N57 lump with 245bp to start with?

As far as my research goes the E92 330d has the same brake setup as the 335d/i.

You don't need to upgrade the break's on the 330D, Replace the break hoses with braided lines, have the break fluid replaced with a higher speck, its prob got Dot 4 so use Dot 5 and that should be it.

Dot 5 (silicon based) fluid is incompatible with ABS. So it's a no go for your BMW. You can use 5.1. They are very different so don't confuse one with the other.

Dot 5.1 has a higher boiling point than dot 4, so if you're in to track days or mountain passes, 5.1 would be worth swopping to.

Glycol based brake fluids (ie dot 3, 4, and 5.1) are hygroscopic, so benefit from changing after 2 to 3 years.

Standard brake lines deteriorate over time so should be renewed if the pedal feels soft; use standard lines or braided, whichever you prefer.

The early E92 330d came with the same brake discs as the 335. Later models come with a smaller disc. You'll need to check which your dad's car has.

Mine comes with the smaller disc and I'm quite happy with the setup. I work on the assumption that if I can trigger the ABS at any speed things are working OK. Maybe if I did track days towing a caravan I'd fit bigger discs.

Would upgrading the brake pads themselves make any difference? Brakes on my 335i don't feel great currently so keen to see what the responses are here.

Yes could make a huge difference depending on the pad.

Fit a set of F30 4 pot Brembo's w/ 370mm discs on the front!

I have them on my E91 325d with the stock 336mm rears and the braking performance is incredible.

However, that depends on your definition of ridiculous - as it might be more than you want to spend?

Don't forget, your car doesn't go any faster after the remap, just gets there quicker. 50mph is still 50mph, no matter if takes you 5 or 10 seconds to get there so, you'll be braking from the same speeds.

Unless you're saying you want to stop quicker, and just using the remap as an excuse?

Is that a straight swap ? any adapters\spacers needed ? would be interested in this

I upgraded my E90 330D front calipers to the 335D ones.

330d discs vs 335d discs

330d caliper vs 335d caliper

I don't think that is true. Use real oem to compare the parts for the same year 330d and 335i/D. The brakes from the 335 have larger disks and the calipers are considerably larger.

As mentioned above early 330d e92's have the big setup but the last models BMW put a smaller system on. If you look on Ebay at E92/E93 330d models nearly all have the 335i/d setup. When I get round to it I have 335d setup going on the front of my E90 to improve the brakes.

If you don't want fading after braking several times from higher speeds, the 335i/d is a good upgrade.
I've done it on mine and they are better than pre-LCI 330d brakes!

That is not true - the acceleration in a given moment is higher, giving the car more momentum. That means the car has more kinetic energy. And it is the kinetic energy that brakes convert to heat through friction.
