So got my car back from the mechanic who checked my engine for a turbo whistle i’m experiencing. Sounds mid pitched and comes and goes, it seems to disappear when doing a couple pulls. When it’s not whistling, it pulls like a champ. The intake side had some oil in in it, which should be okay if not excessive? I will try to get it on video the next time i drive.
The easiest route would be to replace the turbo, but if it’s not shot and no smoke from the exhaust, what could it be? Wastegate not closing, vaccum leak somewhere? The engine is M57D30TÜ2 with a downpipe and Stage 2 chip |

Hi Aramis - I don't come over here often. I have read of a few people with turbo whistle noise having a lose exhaust manifold stud. If memory serves, they said it was up front on either cylinder #1 or #2. I sure hope you don't have a broken stud there.
This may or may not be what you are describing but it is known territory for you to rule out. Good luck! |

Are you meeting your boost requirements? The front stud snapping isn't uncommon on the M57. However this doesn't mean there's going to be a leak. If there was, you'd have issues ALL the time, not just here and there.
I'd guess boost leak, crappy IC seals etc.

I bought the car second hand, already tuned, so i have no idea how much boost it’s supposed to make. It has a Stage 2 chip which adds about 50hp. I’ll definetly check the studs, the ic piping is covered in oil though, i was planning to already replace those seals along with the red boost hose
Added a link, with two videos, one is straight after starting the car, other is after 5mind of driving, does it less while stationary https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...x0?usp=sharing |

So finally was able to take it to a shop where they found out that the turbo was on it’s last legs. The hotside was almost ready to develop a hole and the turbine was already rubbing against the housing. But the whistle remains. Any ideas how to test the IC system for leaks on a budget?

Hi, not sorted yet, although it has gotten better to a point where it happens every other month or so. But i had my front diff out a few months back so i had a clear view of the ehxaust manifold from underneath. The bottom edge had a lot of soot, so thats where my money is. Either a bad exhaust gasket or worst case a bad manifold altogether. If you can somehow inspect it without anything apart then i would suggest to look there. The shop that initially inspected it said the manifold was good, don’t trust something you haven’t seen yourself

thank you for your reply, today i have done the smoking test to see if i had bad gaskets and etc, nothing leaks all good but still hissing turbo, next step is try and remap to a stock map and see if it hisses again, i did not mention that on low rev like from 1k to 2k in first and second gear it whistles but in third gear over 2.5k no more whistle

I doubt that it is the turbo. I got it replaced at first too, but in hindsight it was the worst thing to do. The turbo i got was a reman, which blew in under a year. The shop repaired it free of charge and blew the second time in 6 months. Definitely learned my lesson. If you can, check the manifold
