Company that tuned the M54 is releasing a N52 Supercharger. Wonder if it will be cheaper than converting to N54.

I'm willing to bet that an entire N54-engined car will be cheaper than the N52 SC kit. Which is better value is still subjective, but I know what I'd be doing.

Agree, the only thing that could prove difficult would be finding a manual gearbox N54 car that hasn't been beaten into oblivion by now.

I saw a clip of an n54 swapped into a Nissan the other day, that was neat, you never really see anyone actually use a BMW engine. He said he got the engine from the junkyard for $500.
The problem with swapping is the DME and emissions inspection, it might be hard to get all the monitors to say ready. For that reason I'm planning to supercharge my m54 manual e53 x5, which is basically the same as his wagon, just an SUV form. I'm looking at the same kit but don't really like it. I have an m42b18 4 cylinder sitting here, I'd like to throw it on my lawn mower or something. Not sure what to do with this engine, you never see anyone swap these in. |

Yeah, the durability of the N52 in NA guise is what gives it an edge. But still if you consider outright purchase price, it might look something like this:
N52 (SC); £3000 car, £1000 maintenance, £5000 SC kit, £1000 tuning etc = £10k Vs N54; £5000 car, £3000 maintenance, £500 tuning = £8500 Numbers out of thin air, clearly. And at those prices neither car would be low miles... TBH I'm in the camp of just buy the N54 if you want big power. Keep the N52 cheap and reliable otherwise. |

Over the holiday break I stumbled upon another YouTube channel that I'm hooked on. It's along the same lines as Sreten's channel; it's called 'EMS Garage', and it's a younger guy in Norway restoring heavily damaged/neglected BMWs. It's pretty heavy on Bangle-era cars, so a lot of E8X, E9X, and an E61 in there but production is good and it's a cathartic way to pass the time. No affiliation, just figured I'd throw it out there if others are looking for more of this type of content. |

I'm watching EMS now, he bought a 335i that caught on fire in the trunk and has a blown engine to boot. This guy is brave.
He doesn't exactly do everything to extreme perfection like Sreten, but damn it is so satisfying watching him work on these cars and put them back on the road. I just watched his new F11 video. It's crazy how much he has improved in just a year. Last edited by ee90; 01-19-2025 at 11:24 AM.. |

Yes! Agree on all counts. I just watched the F11 video as well. He's got a great channel going, if you enjoy M539 you'll like this guy too.

I've started watching EMS as well, more screen time for me thanks to this thread, haha.
I'm a little bit torn that he kind of tears into things quickly and it would seem he'd break a lot of plastic connectors, pull wires from terminals, things like that in the process. On the other hand his attitude also has him taking engines out, through the top, in a small garage and by himself. So I'm really mostly with the latter, in awe of what he can do. And it seems to be working. |

I really hope the blue interior gets removed.
Not sure about the corrosion. I am going to get one of those good undercoating kits, with the spray nozzles to get into crevices etc. The pb blaster product is supposedly a bit better than fluid film. I got the f30 out of the garage finally, seems good. The all black interior with gloss carbon trim isn't it anymore. I found nice dark wood trim kit, it's going to look great. |
