Change the coils if one fails. Others may follow after that, but until you get the first failure there's no reason. They can outlast the car in many instances.

I guess do people keep one as a backup in case one starts to fail?

Coils aren't that expensive. No sense in guessing. That's why I replaced all 6 when I was dealing with fluctuating idle. During the replacement, I did noticed one of them was replaced by the previous owner(s). .

I guess what is the best way to determine if you need to replace the coils?

In my case, the idle fluctuates while in DRIVE, stopped at a stoplight. You can clearly see the idle needle move up and down from 600 to 800 RPMs. Plus, you can feel the car jerk like someone is pushing your car from the rear. New plugs and new ignition coils remedied this issue.

Made a quick tutorial on spark plug and coil pack removal and replacement. Hope it helps someone searching on the DIY for it:

Anyone know if the Euro plug schedule is different from the US schedule?
From working as a tech at a bmw dealer I believe that spark plug charges are calculated for every 6 oil changes in the cbs on most modern bmws. Of course at 39k they wouldn’t be terrible but bc you’ve changed the oil 6 times the bmw cbs (condition based serice) system automatically recommends spark plugs when you see your SA
