Long story short I thought it was a fuel delivery and battery problem, addressed both and now the engine idle runs up and down frantically between 1 and 2000 rpm, and if I press the gas to try and even things out it races higher for a moment and then stalls. I've replaced the crankshaft position sensor, the intake and exhaust cam sensors, cleaned the VANOS solenoids, replaced the MAF sensor, valvetronic motor, coils, injectors, and plugs. Okay, maybe not so short.
